  2. Who are EKC SU? You are!... East Kent College Students’ Union is the official body to represent all students here at college, unless you ‘opt out’ you become a member of EKC SU automatically at enrolment. We listen to the opinions of students, and forward any concerns to the College or other bodies such as NUS (National Union of Students), as well as other local and national bodies. We do this to make a real difference to the lives of our students. Representatives of EKC SU think about the wider picture, and attempt to mediate between opposing views, ensuring that the people they represent at East Kent College, have their views adequately addressed. We promote equality of opportunity and celebrate diversity. Any staff member can provide you with a copy of the full Constitution, the document which states the work and rules of EKC SU.

The SU Executive Committee will consist of: • SU President • Vice President (Higher Education) • Vice President (Broadstairs Campus) • Vice President (Dover Campus) • Vice President (Folkestone Campus) • Student Union Coordinator (staff) • Assistant Principal Widening Participation (staff) • Head of Finance or nominee (staff) This committee will meet once a month, rotating fairly between each campus The 3 x Campus-Based Sub-Committees of the SU Executive Committee will consist of: • Campus Vice President • Campus Equality Officer • Campus Events & Activities Officer x 2 • Campus PR Officer • Campus Green Officer • Student Union Coordinator (staff) • Campus Director(staff) This committee will meet once a month at each respective campus, Broadstairs, Dover and Folkestone

SU PresidentFull-time, 37 hours per week (paid)Must have been an EKC student in 13-14 and NOT be studying here this year (14-15) The SU President will be elected to their position by members (fellow students). Candidates wishing to stand are required to initially complete a nomination AND application form, which will be followed by a short-listing process arranged by the Students’ Union Co-ordinator, and involve a panel interview in the weeks preceding the election chaired by the Assistant Principal (Widening Participation) and including the Students’ Union Co-ordinator and an external student representative. The elected SU President, as a member of the SU Executive Committee will: • Take a full part in an induction to the role and any subsequent training relating to committee membership, student representation or quality assurance; • Be the prime representative of the SU; • Work closely with the Students’ Union Co-ordinator to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the SU Executive Committee; • Seek to encourage the active engagement of members; • Attend the Governing Body and other relevant College committees agreed through the Students’ Union Co-ordinator, and report back to the SU through the SU Executive Committee; • Lead delegations to the NUS annual conference, regional conferences and any area conference and report back to the SU through the SU Executive Committee; • Review (with the guidance of the Students’ Union Co-ordinator) and seek approval for updates to all legal documentation relating to the SU, including the Constitution, instrument and articles of government and the SU Code of Practice; • Take an active role in advocating student engagement in the College’s Student Voice initiatives, including involvement in Student Council.

Vice President (Higher Education)120 hours per year (paid)120hrs = equivalent to ½ day per week over 30 weeks As a member of the SU Executive Committee, will: • Take a full part in an induction to the role and any subsequent training relating to committee membership, student representation or quality assurance; • Be the prime representative of SU’s Higher Education members; • Work closely with the SU President (and Students’ Union Co-ordinator) to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the SU Executive Committee; • Seek to encourage the active engagement of members; • Attend the College’s Higher Education Committee and other relevant College committees agreed through the Students’ Union Co-ordinator, and report back to the SU through the SU Executive Committee; • Liaise with officers of the Canterbury Christ Church Students’ Union regarding matters of representation, welfare and social services to Higher Education students; • Engage in an annual student review of Higher Education provision (following guidance by the QAA), supported by the Students’ Union Co-ordinator; • Take an active role in advocating student engagement in the College’s Student Voice initiatives, including involvement in Student Council. Vice PresidentThree posts – Broadstairs, Dover and Folkestone Campus216 hours per year (paid)120hrs = equivalent to a day per week over 36 weeks The SU Vice Presidents will be elected to their position by members (fellow students). Candidates wishing to stand are required to initially complete a nomination AND application form, which will be followed by a short-listing process arranged by the Students’ Union Co-ordinator, and involve a panel interview in the weeks preceding the election chaired by the Assistant Principal (Widening Participation) and including the Students’ Union Co-ordinator and an external student representative. As a member of the SU Executive Committee, will: • Take a full part in an induction to the role and any subsequent training relating to committee membership, student representation or quality assurance; • In conjunction with the President, ensure the interests of the students based at their specific campus are well represented within the SU Executive Committee; • Attend a campus committee agreed with the relevant Campus Director and report back to the SU through the SU Executive Committee; • Chair the respective campus-based Sub-Committee of the SU Executive Committee; • Represent the views of Broadstairs-, Dover- or Folkestone-based students to the College Executive as required; • Support the volunteer SU Officers in their campus-specific roles, ensuring effective co-ordination of SU activities at the campus location; • Take an active role in advocating student engagement in the College’s Student Voice initiatives, including involvement in Student Council.

Equality OfficerThree posts – Broadstairs, Dover and Folkestone Campus Voluntary As a member of a campus-based Sub-Committee of the SU Executive Committee, will: • Take a full part in an induction to the role and any subsequent training relating to committee membership, student representation or quality assurance; • Ensure the interests and issues of students including LGBT students, mature students, students with disabilities and those from minority and under-represented groups are well represented through the SU Executive Committee; • Devise and stage events, activities and meetings that celebrate and reflect on the diversity of students (working with the two campus-based Events & Activities officers and college staff, as appropriate), as agreed by the SU Executive Committee; • Engage actively with local, regional and national projects/campaigns related to equality and diversity, as agreed through the SU Executive Committee; • Take an active role in advocating student engagement in the College’s Student Voice initiatives, including involvement in Student Council.

Activities and Events Officer Six posts in total – two posts at Broadstairs, Dover and Folkestone Campus Voluntary As a member of a campus-based Sub-Committee of the SU Executive Committee, will: • Take a full part in an induction to the role and any subsequent training relating to committee membership, student representation or quality assurance; • Arrange and promote a programme of social and sporting SU events throughout the academic year in response to the views of members and with agreement of the SU Executive Committee; • Organise and support local and national campaigns; • Support the work of the campus-based Equality Officer and Green Officer in designing, planning and staging events, activities, meetings and awareness-raising days; • Encourage and support, in liaison with the Students’ Union Co-ordinator, members in starting and maintaining a club or society; • Work closely with the campus-based PR officer to ensure all activities and events are promoted across the College; • Take an active role in advocating student engagement in the College’s Student Voice initiatives, including involvement in Student Council.

PR Officer Three posts - Broadstairs, Dover and Folkestone Campus Voluntary As a member of a campus-based Sub-Committee of the SU Executive Committee, will: • Take a full part in an induction to the role and any subsequent training relating to committee membership, student representation or quality assurance; • Support the work of the campus-based Activities and Events officers, and in turn the campus-based Equality Officer and Green Officer, through the design and implementation of marketing strategies that promote events, activities and meetings across all three campuses; • Work with the Students’ Union Co-ordinator to ensure events, activities and meetings are promoted across social media; • Engage with the membership, face to face, to promote events, activities and meetings; • Promote local, regional and national projects/campaigns related to equality and diversity, as agreed through the SU Executive Committee; • Take an active role in advocating student engagement in the College’s Student Voice initiatives, including involvement in Student Council.

Green Officer Three posts – Broadstairs, Dover and Folkestone Campus Voluntary As a member of a campus-based Sub-Committee of the SU Executive Committee, will: • Take a full part in an induction to the role and any subsequent training relating to committee membership, student representation or quality assurance; • Devise and stage events, activities and meetings to promote environmentally friendly practice and a ‘green culture’ (working with the two campus-based Events & Activities officers and college staff, as appropriate), as agreed by the SU Executive Committee; • Encourage the development of clubs and societies that promote environmentally friendly practice; • Represent the views of members relating to the environment within the SU Executive Committee; • Engage actively with campus-based, local, regional and national projects/ campaigns related to the environment, as agreed by the SU Executive Committee; • Work in collaboration with fellow campus-based Greed Officers towards a Green Impact award through the National Union of Students; • Take an active role in advocating student engagement in the College’s Student Voice initiatives, including involvement in Student Council.
