  3. “What is Christmas?” ChristmasDay, December 25, is probably the mostpopularholiday in Great Britain. It is a familyholiday. Traditionallyallrelativesandfriends giveeachotherpresents. They decoratetheirhousesin the traditionalwaythat is the Christmas trees are setupinhouses, in the streetsandchurches. The Christmas trees are alwaysdecoratedwithfairy lights, angelsandsmalltoys. In addition little packetswithnuts, candiesandspecialbiscuits are hung on the tree. Presents are putunder the Christmastree.

  4. Christmas Eve On the eve of the Christmas children hang their stockings so that Santa Claus could put presents into them : oranges, sweets, nuts and if the child didn't behave properly Santa Clause can put there a piece of coal as punishment.

  5. “Santa Claus” Santa Claus got his name from a man known as St.Nickolas who lived in Asia in the fourth century. He gave his wealth to the poor and often to children. After he died the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon the Dutch name became Santa Claus.

  6. “A Christmas Carol” Carol singing is an essential part of Christmas. Carols may be traditional or by known composers they can express different feelings. Usually children come around in the evening to the front doors and start singing carols and the people living in these houses give children candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank them for carol singing. Today we shall present such famous Christmas carols as “Ring the bells”, “We wish you a merry Christmas” and others.

  7. “Christmas Lunch” A typical Christmas lunch includes turkey with cranberry sauce and pudding. Every young woman in each house cook a special Christmas dinner. Usually a coin or two are hidden inside the pudding and part of the fun is to see who finds it. After the lunch they go to the sitting room to listen to the Christmas speech of the Queen, shown on TV or sing Christmas carols.

Peopleusuallyspend time withtheirfamilies. Theyoftenseeitas a time of merry-makingandpresent – giving, wishingeachother a merryChristmasandhappynewyear. OnChristmasEvesomepeoplegoto a specialchurchservicecalledMidnightMassat 12 o’clockatnight.

The ChristmasTreebecamepopularinEnglandin 1841 whenQueenVictoria'shusbandPrinceAlbertbrought a ChristmastreefromhisnativeGermanyandputitWindsorCastle . Everyyearpeople of Norwaysend aChristmasTreetoLondon. ItstandsinTrafalgarSquare, infront of the NationalGalleryand is beautifullydecorated.

  10. Christmas dinner The traditionalmealconsists of turkeyservedwithpotatoesandvegetables. This is usuallyfollowedbyChristmaspudding. If the pudding is madeathome, Somepeopleliketohide a coinin the Christmaspuddingandmake a wish, whoevergets the piece of puddingwith the coininonChristmasday is especiallyluckyandtheir "puddingwish" willcometrue! OthertraditionalfoodincludemincepiesandChristmascake.
