  1. The Thesis Formula

  2. Thesis Formula • X. • However, A, B, and C. • Therefore, Y.

  3. X • Represents the strongest point against your argument. • You won’t ever mention this information again in your essay – so you can be specific.

  4. A, B, and C. • Represent the three strongest points for your argument • Your body paragraphs will be about A, B, and C. • Cannot be too specific – specific information goes in your body paragraphs • Choose your three strongest arguments (and the ones you have the most outside information/facts for)

  5. Y • Represents the position you will be taking (your stand on the prompt). • Cannot contradict your “X” statement.

  6. Assess the validity: “Teaching is the most important profession in the world and everyone should consider it as a possible career choice.”

  7. Thesis Statement • “X” -- Teaching is an emotionally satisfying profession. • “A,B,C” – However, teachers rank consistently at the bottom of the pay scale, often work at home without just compensation, and receive a lack of respect in society. • “Y” – Therefore, teaching is clearly not the most important profession and would be an unwise career choice.

  8. Put it all together: Teaching is an emotionally satisfying profession. However, teachers rank consistently at the bottom of the pay scale, often work at home without just compensation, and receive a lack of respect in society. Therefore, teaching is clearly not the most important profession and would be an unwise career choice.

  9. Practice! PROMPT: Assess the validity: “Taking AP classes is a rewarding experience and everyone should take them.”

  10. What do you do first? • BRAINSTORM!!! • Decide which stance you will take. • Find your strongest argument against your position (X statement). • Choose your three strongest arguments (A, B, C) • Write your thesis paragraph!

  11. Practice! • Assess the validity: Columbus and the Spanish were heroes for saving the Indians and civilizing them.
