  4. Computer files are given names. In Windows each name has 2 parts: filename. extension Example: Jerry1.doc

  5. The filename is chosen by you. The extension is assigned by the operating system, depending on which software you are using. Common extensions: .doc .xls .ppt .jpg .bmp .gif .pdf

  6. Notice that there are 3 choices for Folder Options: General View File types The one shown here is: General

  7. The one shown next is: View Not all choices of View are visible.

  8. The one shown last is: File Types Note that I have scrolled down to the alphabetized extension list to a group showing PDF, Adobe Acrobat Document.

  9. Note that I have highlighted PDF, Adobe Acrobat Document. Files with .PDF extension will open with Adobe Reader 8.1

  10. OK, so what have you learned so far today?

  11. Files in Windows have a filename and an extension. There are large numbers of extensions. Each extension has a program associated with it. Users can choose to change the program associated with any given extension.

  12. All windows files are stored in folders. Folders can be stored in other folders.

  14. What's the #1 problem users face with files?

  16. If you know a part of the name or at least the extension, then the Search option may help you locate your missing file.

  17. To start your search follow the Instructions in the left pane. We will search for All files and folders.

  21. From the Start menu, select Accessories

  22. From Accessories, select Windows Explorer

  23. How is Windows Explorer related to Internet Explorer ? They are made by the same company.

  24. How do I place Windows Explorer on my desktop ? Start All Programs Accessories Windows Explorer (right click) Create Shortcut (click & drag shortcut to the desktop)
