  1. Increasing Student Achievement with Document Cameras by Jennifer Kadien Educational Coach McEachern High School

  2. 21st Century Learners • Digital natives • Seek connection/collaboration • Highly visual

  3. Increasing Student Performance Through Technology Integration Current resources available: - desktops/laptops - scanners - overhead projectors - iRespond (student response system) Document cameras can be used with our existing tools

  4. Tried and True Two well-established projects (Washington state) use document cameras in their professional development curricula - one is for K-12 teachers Sustainable Classroom Project Educational Service District 112 - the other targets high school math teachers NO LIMIT! Math Integration Specialists Educational Service District 123

  5. Aligned with District’s Technology Plan CCSD Vision for Technology Use Statements Technology serves as a tool to engage students in quality learning experiences requiring higher-order thinkingskills to solve authentic problems. Students will use next generation technology tools to access, analyze and apply increasingly complex information to draw conclusions and make informed decisions. Students and teachers will use technology to extend learning beyond the classroom and the school day. Students will use technology to connect and collaborate with classmates, educators, and experts around the world.

  6. Supports Research-based Strategies Document cameras can support all of Marzano’s 9 Identifying similarities and differences Summarizing and note taking Reinforcing effort and providing recognition Incorporating homework and practice Using nonlinguistic representations Involving students in cooperative learning Setting objectives and providing feedback Generating and testing hypotheses Using questions, cues, and advance organizers

  7. Document Camera features • magnification and projection of images and 3D objects • real-time image capturing • recording capabilities • microscope accessory

  8. Benefits Cost-effective drastically reduces copying expenses Easy-to-use minimal training required room does not need to be darkened for it to work no prep work required Engaging differentiation Effective reduces lost instructional time during transitions

  9. General Uses Activators/summarizers Record lectures with audio & video and post to blog Demonstrations/modeling/ annotation Displaying exemplary student work Provide immediate feedback Acts as a scanner, preserving work Students as teachers (presentations) Can be used for video-conferencing/virtual collaboration/multimedia projects/webpages/podcasts

  10. Equipment & software Many companies produce document cameras AverMediaProTech Lumens Epson Adesso Samsung My recommendation is the ELMO TT-12 fifth generation model recording capabilities (audio & visual) microscope attachment anti-theft bracket base light box for backlighting transparent objects padded carrying case

  11. Available training & support… On-site or on-line training is included with purchase Online support documents, ordering of parts, and download of service/repair instruction document Live support over the phone, as well as email contact options

  12. Appropriate for all age levels and content areas Here are just a few ideas for classroom uses….

  13. Specific ApplicationsENGLISH Daily Oral Language (DOL) Modeling • writing • editing • revising Annotation

  14. Specific Applications MATH Displaying manipulatives Modeling • calculator use • graphing • problem-solving

  15. Specific ApplicationsSCIENCE Microscope feature • lab experiments • dissections Modeling problems • chemistry/physics

  16. Specific ApplicationsSOCIAL STUDIES Maps Artifacts Timelines Art

  17. Possible limitations may not be compatible with our iRespond Teacher Pads (must contact company regarding the specs) must be connected to a computer (which is connected to the projector)

  18. Cost Doc Cams with features we discussed range from $700-$1100 each Far more cost-effective than 1:1 replacement of our current outdated IWBs (around $4000 each)

  19. Potential funding sources? McEachern Endowment Fund Title II monies (as outlined in the CCSD Tech Plan) Write our own grant

  20. Equitable access Let’s get Doc Cams for everyone  or if that won’t work… survey departments to determine interest level/needs *based on achievement gaps identified on recent standardized testing data, Math will be given priority

  21. Implementation Meeting of Media & Technology Committee to develop plan Technology Specialist does a walk-through (preliminary discussions about room configurations) Funding Secured Order placed Delivery Teacher training in Media Center (technical use) *Note: most of our teachers have already been trained on and are already using Marzano’s 9 Instructional strategiesin their classrooms Deployment of the document cameras

  22. Additional research available discussing effective use of Doc Cams http://www.academia.edu/399297/Technology_Support_for_Whole_Group_Engagement_A_Pilot_Study http://www.esd112.org/digitaledge/docs/white_papers/Doc_Cam_White_Paper.pdf

  23. Reflection Doc Cams are • cost-effective • useful for all contents and grades levels • aligned with the CCSD Tech Use Plan • supportive of research-based strategies • capable of recording • promoting collaboration with web 2.0 tools
