Factors and Interactions • WNV is an arthropod borne virus • Asian Tiger Mosquito is the vector of WNV
Factors and Interactions • Mosquito species vary according to geography • In Utah the primary vectors are the Culex Tarsalis and Culex Pipien species
Factors and Interactions • The mosquito life cycle • Egg larvae pupae adult
Factors and Interactions • Requires water temperature above 65 degrees to mature into an adult • Temperatures of 90 and above the mosquito can go from egg to adult in as few as 5 days
Factors and Interactions • WNV is transmitted through the saliva of the mosquito when the proboscis is inserted
Threat Assessment in the US • National surveillance has documented person with WNV illness since 1999
Signs and Symptoms • Most people have no type of illness. • About 20% of the infected get West Nile Fever (Mild symptoms) • 1 in 150 of the infected will get a more severe form of the disease. (West Nile Encephalitis or Meningitis) • Symptoms can take 3 to 14 days to show.

Diagnosis • Contact your doctor immediately • Risk determined by where you live and have traveled • Blood samples • IgM antibody in cerebrospinal fluid
Treatment • No specific treatment • Hospitalization • Iv therapy (fluids) • Respiratory support
Prevention • Stay indoors at dusk or dawn • Use screens on doors and windows • Wear long sleeve shirts and pants • Use DEET, also apply to clothes • Remove standing water • Avoid touching sick/dead birds
