Challenges • 1879- NY passes a law that set minimum standards for plumbing and ventilation in apartment buildings • To meet the standards, land lords began building dumbbell tenements, long narrow, five or six-story buildings that were shaped like barbells • Public parks, walk ways, and bike paths were put into action as a response to the overwhelming pollution that was being produced by mechanical machines
