  1. Why Man Creates

  2. Communication • humankind creates in order to communicate; we all have a need to say something • Art is a reflection of life, necessary for human survival. • Art is selective. Different art forms focus on certain elements and eliminate others.

  3. The visual arts deal with sight , frozen and constant. They capture a subject and hold it fast. • Music concentrates on sound: not sight. • Performing arts includes both music and visual • Theatre occupies both time and space.

  4. Characteristics of Performing Arts 1. it has movement through time and space 2. requires interpreters as well as creators 3. requires an audience It can be recorded on film/tape but it must be live to begin with. Recorded without an audience it becomes a movie. Interaction is essential to the performing arts.

  5. Histrionic Sensibility The validation of what you create, causes you to create more, (a bigger need to create). It separates performer from audience

  6. Things we should already know!!!! • Theatre is a collaborative art. Think: what does the word collaborative mean? Write our brainstorm in your notebook. • The two most important elements: actors/audience • Each performance is unique. The encounter between audience and actors is new each time it occurs.

  7. The Tempest • Here is what Julie Taymor says: 1. the creative team (director, actors, designers) should pull you in to the magic. They work as a team in collaboration. 2. live theatre is dangerous Think: why does she say this. Note our conversation in your note book.

  8. SHAKESPEARE • What else Julie Taymor says: 3. Shakespeare writes the perfect theatre piece. - it is so large (it has: ghosts, villains, complicated situations, love, battles, etc.) - because the stage directions are within the script, not written out between the lines, you can use your imagination.
