  1. IPRC Theme-5: APDRC Overview Theme 5: To increase understanding of climate variability in the Asia-Pacific region by: developing the computational, data management, and networking infrastructure necessary to make data resources readily accessible and usable; undertaking data-intensive research activities that will both advance knowledge and lead to improvements in data preparation and data products.

  2. Organization:1. Data Server System (DSS) and Data Management (DM) Sharon DeCarlo Systems Admin, Web design and maintenance, Yongshen Zhang Atmospheric Data Specialist Yingshou Shen s/w server manager, implementation Jan Hafner Air-sea flux, satellite Data Specialist Peter Hacker

  3. Organization:2. Product development and Basic Research Yanli Jia Regional modeling (HYCOM) Sachiko Yoshida GODAE N. Pacific intercomparison Tommy Jensen Regional modeling (POM) Konstantin Lebedev Argo product development Max Yaremchuk Data Assimilation

  4. Overview:1. Data Server System (DSS) and Data Management (DM) • Identify, download, serve climate data sets for research scientists (remote and local) • Maintain web-based searching, subsetting, plotting and downloading capabilities • Provide direct, binary access to data sets via OPeNDAP, ftp, http • Document all data sets

  5. Overview:1. Data Server System (DSS) and Data Management (DM), cont’d • Large output serving (hi-res models) • Support to JAMSTEC, U Tokyo • Integrate/implement server technology • Technology transfer (web services at SOPAC, S. China Sea Institute, U. Tokyo) • Web support for Observing Systems (PI-GOOS, PI-GCOS, HYCOS)

  6. Non-scientific users  emphasis on web interface/access Plot generation More co-ordinated approach LAS/DCHART APDRC Server Design • Scientific users  emphasis on server technology • direct access to data • typically large (long timeseries and/or large spatial extents) • OPeNDAP/DAPPER

  7. 2. DATA DISCOVERY

  8. 2. DATA DISCOVERY; 3. METADATA

  9. Overview:2. Basic and applied research • Basic research in support of IPRC themes • Research leading to product development: • PRIDE • GODAE • Argo • Model downscaling
