In this new century, where tests are many and challenges change with the shifting of the wind, we must hold fast to the principles that have made our nation the envy of the world.” -Bill Owens

  3. What is Merit Pay? Part of employees salary related to good performance. Teachers case: Results of testing directly affects their pay. Based on students and teachers performances and standardized testing.

  4. Arguments Against Merit Pay • Many factors play a part in students performance, not only teachers. • It creates competition and no collaboration b/w the teachers will take place. • The teachers will spend most of their time teaching only subjects pertaining to the test.

  5. Cons for Merit Pay • Teacher do not get paid enough as it is • Favoritism and Bias • Inevitably encourage dishonesty and corruption

  6. Poverty • Affects: -nutrition -test scores -All areas of development -emotions -healthcare -motivation -school, family, & overall life

  7. Standardized Testing • Biased and favor a certain group. • Scores based on the test lead to children being labeled. • Does not accurately measure the child’s abilities. • Puts stress on teachers as well as students. “Creative work is incredibly difficult, and that is where the tests lie.” -Jeanette Winterson

Some People Think….. • “Merit Pay programs will help recruit and retain the nation’s brightest minds.” • “Incentivized teachers will work harder and produce better results.” • “Allows a differentiation between individual and company performance.” • Since President Obama supports “Merit Pay”, so should everyone!
