In 2006, during the FPAW presentation by Kevin Johnston, a proposal was put forth to change the Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) coding globally. This initiative, aimed for implementation by 2009, suggested the addition of a date/time group (DTG) in every line of TAF products, ensuring clarity and consistency. The adjustments would necessitate new software for coding and decoding. Furthermore, a near-term option was introduced for a 24-30 hour TAF-like product at select US airports, known as the Extended TAF (XTF), providing detailed aerodrome forecasts.
