  4. After POLLINATION (pollen reaches the stigma) and FERTILIZATION (sperm fuses with egg) the OVULE becomes the SEED and the OVARY becomes the FRUIT. Ovule Ovary Yes, pollen is plant sperm and fruits are plant ovaries 

  5. Analysis and Conclusion • The lily you dissected is a MONOCOT. It has 3 petals and 3 sepals (which look like petals) and 6 stamens. This means it’s flower parts are in multiples of three which is a characteristic of monocots. • The purpose of petals is to attract pollinators How would the veins on the leaves of the lily be arranged?

  6. Analysis and Conclusion 3. The stigma is sticky – STICKY STIGMA- that way the pollen sticks to it easily when pollinators are around this part of the flower

  7. Reproductive Anatomy of the Flower 4. Pollen grains have to be dispersed to other plants, but ovules are tucked away safely inside the ovary. Therefore, the pollen is more likely to be damaged, washed away, lost forever. 5. Heavy rainfall in the spring will wash away the pollen on the anthers. No pollen = no pollination which means no fertilization. This means there are no seeds (which means there are also no fruits).

  8. Analysis and Conclusions 6. After fertilization, the ovule becomes the seed and the ovary becomes the fruit. If you pick the flowers off of an apple tree you are also removing the “future fruit” 7. Flowers pollinated by wind have smaller petals so that the wind can easily reach the stamen without being blocked by the petals 8. Flowers pollinated by insects Have bright colors to attract pollinators
