  2. Objectives: • To find out what factors affect how well a substance dissolves • To apply our understanding to the problem of getting the most sugar and carbon dioxide into our soda. Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 2

  3. Engage Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy Good morning! We know that people like the sweet taste of soda. That means adding sugar. And fizz! People love the tingle! How can we get the most fizz into our soda? Let’s find out. 3

  4. But first, we need to think about what we mean by dissolving. What can dissolve? Engage Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 4

  5. Explore We’ve got a selection of powders here to test. We might use some of them in our soda recipe but do they dissolve? Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 5

  6. Explore Oh, by the way. We have three different liquids to test as solutes as well: water, ethanol and cooking oil. Before you start, prepare a table to collect your results and show me what it will look like. Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 6

  7. Solvent Solute Explore Here’s a good table for results. How close is yours to this one? Why is it useful to draw out a table for results before you start the experiment? Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 7

  8. Explore What could you see happening with the sugar and the water? Using ideas about particles explain why this happened. Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 8

  9. Explore OK, so what was different about the chalk and the ethanol? What could you see happening with the chalk and the ethanol? Using ideas about particles explain why this happened. Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 9

  10. You are very good researchers and know a lot about science! Let’s summarise what we know now and write it on the flipchart. Explore Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 10

  11. Explore Next stage! Our soda will contain sugar - people like the taste of sugar! But how quickly can we make the sugar solution for the soda? How can we reduce the time it takes for sugar to dissolve in the water? Any ideas? Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 11

  12. Explore Check your method! What are you changing (the independent variable)? What are you measuring (the dependent variable)? What are you keeping the same to make the test fair? Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 12

  13. Explain So, how does temperature affect how quickly sugar dissolves? Let’s add that to the things we already know on our flipchart. Why is it important to know what factors affect how quickly the sugar dissolves? Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 13

  14. Elaborate I have one more question. Our soda must have a good sparkle! That means fizz and the gas that does this for us is carbon dioxide. How can we fill our soda with carbon dioxide? Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 14

  15. Elaborate You need to meet the Head of Production at our bottling plant. Please listen carefully to what he says. I will have questions for you when you come back! Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 15

  16. Elaborate Sawatdee krup everyone! I am the Head of Production at the Pattaya bottling plant. Let me explain just what we do. Carbon dioxide needs to be pushed into the soda solution. We cannot just wait for it to dissolve. We use cylinders of the gas and force it at high pressure into the water. Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy URL Head of Production Division 16

  17. Elaborate Do you know how much we get into one bottle? Watch this video - you may be surprised! Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy URL Head of Production Division 17

  18. Evaluate Welcome back! Time for you to teach me now! What affects how well the carbon dioxide dissolves in the soda? Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 18

  19. Why does the soda ‘fizz’ when I take the top off? Evaluate Thai SodaSweet and Fizzy 19

  20. Evaluate Ah, one more thing... We know how temperature affects how quickly sugar dissolves in water but does it affect how much sugar can dissolve? Explain to your partner the difference between these two questions and then plan an investigation to find out how temperature affects how much sugar can dissolve in water.
