  3. 1. Cold Storage Center • Refrigerator is the focus of this center • Items stored nearby might include: • Plastic storage bags • Food wraps • Containers for leftovers

  4. 2. Sink Center • Main source of water • Tasks: • Washing fruits and vegetables • Draining foods • Washing dishes • Items stored nearby might include: • Cleanup supplies

  5. 3. Cooking Center • Range • Items stored nearby might include: • Cooking tools • Pots/Pans • Potholders • Small cooking appliances • Canned/Packaged foods

  6. 4. Mixing Center • Preparing and mixing foods • Items stored nearby might include: • Measuring cups/spoons • Bowls • Electric mixer • Mixing spoons • Flour • Spices • *In a small kitchen, this area could be combined with another*

  7. 5. Planning Center • Space to store cookbooks, recipes, and coupons • Desk for meal planning and shopping lists • Calendar/bulletin board/phone/computer

  9. Preventing Kitchen AccidentsAn Accident-Free Kitchen!

  10. General Safety Guidelines 1. Don’t let hair, jewelry, sleeves or apron strings dangle 2. Stay Focused! 3. Prevent clutter (when finished, put things away)

  11. General Safety Guidelines 4. Close drawers and doors completely after you open them 5. Use the right tool for the job. Example:Don’t use a knife to pry off a jar cover 6. Store heavy/bulky items, such as cookware, on low shelves

  12. Preventing Cuts 1. Keep knives sharp and use them properly 2. Don’t try to catch a falling knife 3. Don’t soak knives or other sharp-edged utensils in the sink 4. Sweep up broken glass from floor • If you need to pick up pieces by hand…. Use a wet paper towel instead of bare fingertips. Seal glass in a paper or plastic bag

  13. Using Electricity Safely 1. Water and electricity don’t mix o Don’t run cords around the sink 2. Don’t use an electrical appliance when your hands are wet or if you are standing on a wet floor. 3. Avoid damage to electrical cord. • Don’t run them over a hot surface • Remove from plug properly! 4. Never force a plug into a socket

  14. Hazardous Chemicals 1. Keep products in their original container 2. Do not mix chemicals 3. Store hazardous chemicals away from foods 4. Keep out of reach of children 5. Use safe, simple cleaners when possible

  15. Preventing Range and Microwave Accidents 1. Use potholders/oven mitts 2. When uncovering a lid to a pot or pan, lift up the far edge away from the cover first so that the steam will flow away from you. 3. Use only pots and pans in good condition 4. Keep pan handles turned toward the back or middle of the range top 5. Keep paper towels away from range (flammable items)

  16. Preventing Range and Microwave Accidents 6. Arrange oven racks properly before you start the oven 7. Stand to the side when you open the oven door 8. Don’t reach into a hot oven (pull out rack) 9. Clean up spills and crumbs after the oven has cooled 10. Be sure cook-top and oven/broiler controls are turned off when not in use

  17. If a fire starts... What do I do?

  18. Range Top or Electric Skillet 1. Turn off the heat 2. Put the cover on the pan or pour salt or baking soda on the flames 3. Never use water! The grease will splatter and spread the fire. 4. Don’t use baking powder- it could make the fire worse

  19. Oven, Microwave or Toaster Oven 1. Turn off or disconnect the appliance 2. Never attempt to carry a pan with burning contents 3. Call the fire department
