How should we then live
How Should we then Live?

31 "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. - Ephesians 5:31-32

33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. - Ephesians 5:33

Confusion in the culture
Confusion in the Culture

  • Lust (eros)

  • Like (phileo)

  • Love (agape)

  • ‘in love with’

How should we then live1
How Should we then Live?

4 Jesus: “Have you not read? He who made them from the beginning made them male & female.” - Matt 19:4

27So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. - Genesis 1:27

His job

  • “However, let each one of you love [agape] his wife as himself, …”

  • Agape love is unconditional and sacrificial love given regardless of her performance as a woman

  • The cost of a love-dominated culture.

Her job

  • “…, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

  • This respect needs to be there regardless of performance, just like the Agape love she craves from him is regardless of performance.

When all is said and done
When All is Said and Done: toward him encourage

  • The key to motivating another person is meeting their deepest need.

    • The fastest way to demotivate someone is to crush their spirit - to deny their deepest need.

  • Respect for a husband is a marginal issue in today’s culture.

    • “All that matters is that we love one another, and if you would just change a little bit and love me a little bit better, I would out-love you!”
