  1. The Fifth Commandment Confessions - 5

  2. L Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, • C have mercy and hear us. Our Father, who art in heaven, • hallowed be thy name, • thy kingdom come, • thy will be done, • on earth as it is in heaven. • Give us this day our daily bread; • and forgive us our trespasses, • as we forgive those who trespass against us; • and lead us not into temptation, • but deliver us from evil. • For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, • forever and ever. Amen WORSHIP

  3. C . I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Worship - 2

  7. The Ten Commandments: The Simple Way a Father Should Present Them to His Household The Fifth Commandment: You must not kill. Q. What does this mean? A. We must fear and love God, so that we will neither harm nor hurt our neighbor's body, but help him and care for him when he is ill. Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder.” Deuteronomy 5:  17 “You shall not murder.” Discussion & reflection:

  8. Isaiah 66:23 From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD. What does Isaiah 66:23 mean? Isaiah 66:23 comes at the end of the book of Isaiah and reflects the promise of those who had been held captive in Babylon. Returning home to Israel will be a sign of a new beginning. This new beginning begins when God brings His people home. It finds fulfillment when everyone comes to God in worship, giving thanks for His faithfulness. Discussion & reflection:

  9. When you speak harshly to someone is that the same as killing? If you spread a rumor that you don’t know is true, is that the same as killing? If you kill someone, haven’t you denied them the possibility of a new beginning? Discussion & reflection:

  10. St. Cyprian (d.258), “This holy mystery of oneness, this unbreakable bond of close-knit harmony is portrayed in the Gospel by our Lord Jesus Christ’s coat, which was not divided or cut at all...” Unity of the Catholic Church, chapter 7, p. 49 Make a list of every member of this class. Next to their name write at least three things you like about that person. Discussion & reflection:

  11. In our Nicene Creed, we confess “I believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” This is what we believe. This oneness comes by our participation in the one body of Jesus Christ, our new beginning in the water of holy baptism. When we harm our neighbor or ourselves we reduce their and our participation in the “one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” Is this a problem??? Discussion & reflection:

  12. St. Augustine (354-430), “Heaven and earth are appropriately thought of as husband and wife, for the earth is fruitful from heaven giving it fecundity.” The Lord’s Sermon on the Mount, chapter 6, p. 112 Make a list of what you think would make a perfect husband or wife. Discussion & reflection:

  13. Our oneness is the oneness of husband and wife where Christ Jesus is our husband and the Church is His wife. As Jesus accomplished the Father’s will, so the Holy Spirit works out the Father’s will in the Church so that the Church produces the Father’s holiness. If we kill someone are we killing the wife of Christ? If we insult or harm someone is that someone the wife of Christ? Discussion & reflection:

  14. St. Origen (c.185-254), “...when many are assembled legitimately for the glory of Christ, the angel of each encamps round each of them that fear God, and that he stands at the side of the man whose protection and guidance has been entrusted to him. Thus when the saints are assembled together, there is a two fold church present, that of men and that of angels.” Prayer, Chapter 31.4 p. 134. Discussion & reflection:

  15. When we were small children we were told about our guardian angel. Perhaps the thought was to calm us when we had trouble sleeping. But the reality is that we do have guardian angels that maintain their vigil in our lives wherever we are. When we join together in worship all of our angels gather together with us. Do you believe in angels? Do you believe you have a guardian angel? When we want to harm someone else, to “get back” at them, to seek vengeance, will that person’s guardian angel work against us? Discussion & reflection:

  16. Johannes Tauler (c.1300-1361), “The house where the disciples were gathered was completely filled. In one sense this house signifies the Holy Church...In another sense it signifies each man in whom the Spirit dwells. Now, just as there are many dwellings and rooms in one house, so in one man there are many faculties, senses and activities; and in all these He enters in a special way.” Sermon 26, p. 92 Discussion & reflection:

  17. The oneness of the Church is expressed even more deeply. Not only does the Church live its life within God, but so do we individuals. We are the conversation of the Holy Trinity. But even more deeply, not only ourselves as individuals, but every one of our senses, abilities and passions are places for the Holy Spirit to work out the holiness of our Savior. Does abusing alcohol and doing illegal drugs reduce our participation in the holy conversation of the Holy Trinity? Discussion & reflection:

  18. Isn’t it the will of the Holy Spirit working in us, through us, for us to work for the healing of the people around us, at church, at home, at school, at work? What are you doing that promotes God’s healing in your friends and family, strangers and enemies? Discussion & reflection:
