  2. RECAP Creating A High Performing School • NorthshoreCharter School’s goal is being the highest quality school in the nation. Our success will be based on the growth of our students. We take this mission very seriously and will do everything necessary to make sure students are successful.

  3. Developing Academics, Character, and Leadership Skills • Students achieve more highly when they feel safe. Emotional and physical safety are essential. • Under fear of any kind, we respond in ways that keep us safe. Hunger, thirst, shame, fear, embarrassment, pain, or confusion cause a reaction that is not always positive and is certainly not conducive to learning. • What can a school do? We can build an atmosphere where all students feel safe. We do this by having daily meetings to talk about expectations and positive climate. Peer mediation groups are formed. Students are accountable for their behavior. Adults are held accountable as well. We teach and talk with our students about why we have certain expectations and what we want for them.

  4. Developing Academics, Character, and Leadership Skills • Every child is valued. Teachers greet students each morning. The day starts with a morning meeting. Each classroom has a mailbox for students to be able to send a note to their teacher if they have a concern they cannot voice. For our youngest students who do not write, they will have access to cards with different emotions. It is important for all of our students to be able to express how they feel. • Children learn they are part of a learning team. Every person has strengths and weaknesses. One quality we know is that children as early as first grade recognize there are meaningful differences in their academic and physical abilities. This statistically causes children to demonstrate certain behaviors. They may become the class clown or bully. They may try to become invisible or destructive. We have to help them value their strengths and fill in the gaps that are weaknesses. We have to treat each child by his or her individual need. • Our students will learn some fundamental character traits. These are not just words on the wall. They aren’t ideas we just talk about. They are actions. Actions students and staff take.

  5. Developing Academics, Character, and Leadership Skills • There are seven traits that Northshore Charter School will use to have a great impact on students’ feelings about safety and their academic success. • ZEST – approaching life with excitement and energy; feeling alive and activated • Actively participates • Shows enthusiasm • Invigorates others

  6. Developing Academics, Character, and Leadership Skills • SELF-CONTROL – regulating what one feels and does; being self-disciplined • School Work • Comes to class prepared • Pays attention and resists distractions • Remembers and follows directions • Gets to work right away rather than procrastinating • Interpersonal • Remains calm even when criticized or otherwise provoked • Allows others to speak without interruption • Is polite to adults and peers • Keeps temper in check

  7. Developing Academics, Character, and Leadership Skills • GRATITUDE – being aware of and thankful for opportunities that one has and for good things that happen • Recognizes and shows appreciation for others • Recognizes and shows appreciation for his/her opportunities • CURIOSITY – taking an interest in experience and learning new things for its own sake; finding things fascinating • Is eager to explore new things • Asks and answers questions to deepen understanding • Actively listens to others

  8. Developing Academics, Character, and Leadership Skills • OPTIMISM – expecting the best in the future and working to achieve it • Gets over frustrations and setbacks quickly • Believes that effort will improve his or her future • GRIT – finishing what one starts; completing something despite obstacles; a combination of persistence and resilience • Finishes whatever he or she begins • Tries very hard even after experiencing failure • Works independently with focus

  9. Developing Academics, Character, and Leadership Skills • SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE – being aware of motives and feelings of other people and oneself; including the ability to reason within large and small groups • Able to find solutions during conflicts with others • Demonstrates respect for feelings of others • Knows when and how to include others

  10. CURRICULUM • Our students will meet or exceed the expectations of the Common Core State Standards. • These standards have been adopted by 46 states including Louisiana. The structure of the standards allows our curriculum to be built in a structure more beneficial for learning. The structure will be:

  11. CURRICULUM • Students will be challenged with tougher homework assignments. • Parent Workshop Backpack Guide.pdf • A more rigorous curriculum leads to higher student achievement. However, our assessments will be more rigorous too and there is increased accountability. Our school is already focused on the work ahead and what our students need in order to be successful. We do not blame the test, our students, our community, or our families. We know it will take effort to make the changes students need in order to be successful.

  12. CURRICULUM • If students feel safe and are provided with a rigorous curriculum, if we individualize, assess, and create a learning plan for each child by name and need, if we value our families and include them in the decisions for their children, we will produce a high performing school.

  13. Conclusion • I understand the power of education. Our students are our focus because the decisions we make effect their lives. I take the undertaking very seriously and I am grateful for the opportunity to make sure each student at Northshore Charter School receives the best education because they deserve it.
