  2. Not Sure Where You Are Going? • Go to WOIS.org • Take interest inventories • Research careers and colleges

  3. Go to Work • Look for business that you can move up in • Go to big companies to get benefits • All you need is a resume and some letters of recommendation

  4. Resume Template • Go the FHS website • Scroll over “Counseling” • Scroll over “Career Center” • Click on “Career Plan and Resume Templates” • Several options to choose from – or make your own!

Apprenticeship Programs • The Original 4 Year Degree • Train for 4 years under a journeyman • Start at a reasonable wage, increase pay rapidly • Plumbing is in need of employees • Crane Operating • www.lni.wa.gov/tradeslicensing/apprenticeship/programs/ • Or Google Search: Apprenticeships in Washington PLUMBERS are in current high demand

  7. Job Corps • Federal Program for low income students • Cross between college and military • Live on closed campus, dorm style • Work/Train during week • Weekends off • Small paycheck • Room, board, insurance • www.jobcorps.gov

  8. Military • Take ASVAB test • Must score 35 to get in, 50 or higher to choose career • Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force • Must complete boot camp • Then have a “regular” job, unless serving active duty • May enlist full time or reserves • All include GI Bill for college

  9. GI Bill = College $ • Use while enlisted (attend college after work) • Use as a Reserve (go to college, spend weekends/summers serving military commitments) • OR pass on to your children

  10. Military Academy • West Point offers a Bachelor’s Degree • Application process is very rigorous • Must be nominated by congressional representative, have outstanding grades and SAT/ACT scores • Train to be an Officer • Tuition – FREE • Class size 8:1 • Acceptance Rate: 10%

  11. 2 Year Degree • Bellingham Technical College • Whatcom Community College • 34 Community and Technical Colleges in WA • Many, many programs are offered throughout the state • Average starting wage is $35.000/yr • Job placement is about 80% • Just need a high school diploma to apply • Take the Accuplacer test

  12. Technical Colleges • More “hands on” • Wide variety of training including degrees and certificates • Some degrees are less than 2 years

  13. Community Colleges • Associates Degree = 2 years • Can be in specific area, like massage, nursing, early childhood education, or criminal justice • Or “Transfer Degree” to University For more information: http://www.sbctc.edu/

  14. 4 Year Colleges and Universities • Bachelor’s Degree • Take GURs (General Undergraduate Requirements) • Choose a Major in specific content area Tip of the day: When choosing a college/university to apply to, make sure they have your intended major
