  2. Early Life • Goethe was born of German descent to a wealthy family in Frankfurt • He was given many advantages in life from the start • As a child he felt he had “an ever busy imagination”

  3. Sickness • Goethe became extremely ill during the period of 1768-1770 • During this time he became very interested in poetry and wrote a comedy as well • His relationship with his father went downhill during this time

  4. Legal Attempt • Goethe became a certified licensee in 1771 • He was a very aggressive lawyer and lost his position after just a few months • This was very influential because it led him to pursue a literary career

  5. Weimar • Goethe was invited to Weimar by the later-to-be Grand Duke Carl August • He became the Duke’s chief advisor • He was very active in many court processions • He would reside in Weimar for the rest of his life

  6. Italy and Later Life • In 1786 Goethe visited Italy and remained there for about two years • He was majorly influenced by this trip and the journal he kept while there helped him in writing many future materials • After having returned to Weimar, he participated in the battle of Valmy in 179

  7. Italy and Later Life • After an extremely long relationship, Goethe married ChristianeVulpius in 1806 • The two had a few children together before her death in 1816 • Goethe continued with literature until his death in 1832

  8. Impact • Goethe was extremely well known and his legacy continues to this day • The mineral goethite was named after him • His literary works are kept in libraries around the world • His ideas had a very prevalent impact on many philosophers and writers of the 19th century

Impact • He is considered to be among an elite group of influential men from history due to his many literary works and ideas • His diverse talents make him a historical figure that made a major impact in all fields of European life • He will always be remembered as one of the most intelligent, most influential Germans of all time
