  2. Unit 1 – Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care • The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand effective communication, the barriers that may exist and the ways to overcome these.

On completion of this unit you will have completed the following key topics • Understand effective communication and interpersonal interaction in health and social care, • Understand factors that influence communication and interpersonal interaction in health and social care, • Understand ways to overcome barriers in health and social care environment, • Be able to communicate and interact effectively in the health and social care environment.

  6. What is communication ?

  7. Communication is: ‘ the exchange of information between individuals, groups and organisations. There are different methods of communicating….’ Richards (2003)

  8. Communication – an introduction …. • When looking at the concept of communication you must take into account various aspects. • You must look at the following: • Context, • Forms of communication used, • Types of interpersonal interaction • Communication and language needs and preferences.

Context of communication • Context of communication are the context/situation during which the communicative exchange is occurring, • Context can be as follows: • One to one , • Group communication, • Formal communication, • Communication between colleagues, • Communication between professional people and people using services, • Communication with professional, • Multi-agency working.

One to one communication • Conversation which occurs between two individuals can be in a form of a greeting, conversation/information exchange and even a farewell. • In order to engage in an effective one to one exchange, you must ensure that you have created a good feeling which will enable the person to feel relaxed.

Group communication • Why do people choose to engage in group discussions within health and social care settings ? • Why is there a need for a group leader? • Why is it important to come prepared and briefed on the context of the meeting when taking part in a group discussion? • Why is it important to be able to take turns? • Why should the room laid out so that everyone is able to make eye contact?

  13. Communication between colleagues • What are the key aspects of effective communication between colleagues ?

  14. Effective communication between colleagues • Respect, • Greeting and investing time on warm up talk, • Effective listening, • Trust, • Abiding by the social expectations set in your workplace.

  15. Communication between professional people • Language community is the important concept when looking at communication between professional people and those using services: • Special terminology – technical language, • Phrases, • Social expectations, • Ways of interacting.

Communication with professionals/Multi-agency working/Multi professional working. • Key issue is understanding, when two professionals from 2 different health and social care agencies communicate. • In this context there is always a chance that there could be some misunderstanding 2 agencies when dealing with the same service user thus messages must be clear and detailed.

M1 Tips • In order to achieve M1, you will need to assess the importance of 4 forms of communication which are used the most within your placement and assess how important they in order to: • Work effectively between colleagues, • Communication between yourself and your service users, • Communicating with professionals, • Multi-agency working.

M1 – Tips • So for each of the 4 forms of communication you have chosen you must look at one of the context identified in the previous slide. • For example • Forms and communication between colleague, • Text messaging communication with professionals. • You will need to ensure that you make clear links to yopur placement when identifying 1 strength and one weakness for each of your chosen 4 forms.

Example • Forms are important type of communication when communicating between professional as they ensure that information about service users is communicated clearly between service providers. For example, when attending a hospital, new service providers will be required to complete a basic informative form which details their needs and preferences, such as allergies or dietary restrictions. This information is crucial in order to ensure that the correct care given constantly even following a shift change i.e. allergy to penicillin. However, the use of forms within a hospital settings can be a weakness as paper documentation can be lost and an individual requiring support for a chronic condition might be made to wait longer for an appointment with a specialist especially if lost.
