What is Trigonometry
• Study of how sides and angles of a triangle are related to each other
When/where did trigonometry originate
• It came from the ancient Egyptian and Babylonian
• It was kind of a mathematic way to work with triangles
3 most used trig functions and their ratios
• Sine: a/h (opposite over hypotenuse)
• Cosine: b/h (adjacent over hypotenuse)
• Tangent: a/b (opposite over adjacent)
• Cotangent, secant, and cosecant are three other functions
Three other functions
• Cotangent, secant, and cosecant
• All of the functions require being set up as a ratio
• Cosine, cotangent, and cosecant use horizontal lines
• Secant, sine, and tangent use vertical lines
• I have seen sine tangent and cosine on the calculator we use in class.
Real-world applications that involve trig
• Building bridges and determining the force of a beam
• Whether your ladder is long enough to clean out a gutter
• Creating a map (cartography)
• Digital imaging
Unit Circle
• A circle with a radius of one
• Demonstrates that sine and cosine are periodic functions
• Yes circles and triangles
Discovery of Trigonometry
• BartholemaeusPitiscus
• August 24, 1561 – July 2, 1613
• Studied theology in Zerbst and Heidelberg

My Information Came From:
• "Introduction to Trigonometry." Trigonometry. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Sept. 2012. <http://www.mathisfun.com/algebra/trigonometry.html>.
• "What Is Trigonometry?" What Is Trigonometry?N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Sept. 2012. <http://www.cut-the-knot.org/WhatIs/WhatIsTrigonometry.shtml>.
Project Idea!!!
• Football players use trigonometry when tackling a player
• I could go to a football game or practice and figure out the best tackling angles.
