  3. AVID’s Mission • Mission: To close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society • ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION

  4. MJHS AVID Tenets • Participation in Honor’s class • Tutorology • Family Workshops • College Field Trips

  5. After School Sessions • Two Components (Rotations) FIRST… • Structured tutorials with experienced and (AVID) trained instructors • Small Groups • Utilizing AVID WICOR strategies • Tutors are shared with Brush

  6. Second…College Readiness Activities • Binder Organization • Guest Speakers • Progress Monitoring • College Awareness Activities

  7. Instructional Supports • Majority of our core content teachers are AVID trained • Teachers utilize AVID strategies in classrooms

  10. AVID REQUIREMENTS2013-2014 • Participate in all AVID after-school sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays • Maintain a GPA of at least 2.0 • Maintain positive behavioral expectations as set by the Student Code of Conduct.

  11. How Can Parents Help? • Encourage student to use/organize Planner daily • Make sure students attend all after school sessions • Help student be accountable for actions • Promote an atmosphere of higher education

  12. AVID Academic BenefitsSumming It Up…. • Curricular support • Structured Tutorials • Redefined academic peer group • Emphasis on study skills, organization, goal setting, and time management- connected to academics • Exposure to college readiness activities • Increased sense of Accountability
