  1. ADVERTISE YOURSELF PRESENTATIONS Horizon Wireless SKATEBOARD SCIENCE FALL 2008 Welcome to our 2007-08 Horizons Program. Our team unfortunately lost Mrs. Winkie to Big Creek. We currently have 3 full time Horizons teachers: Joyce Frederick – 1st - 3rd Christi Phillips – Kdg., 1st / 4th Carolyn Caldwell – 5th COMING SOON NEEDED: flat cardboard trays with edge from 4-six pack of soft drinks, paper towel & toilet paper rolls, round cardboard containers (oatmeal boxes), wrapping paper rolls, straight plastic soda straws, adding machine tape, cereal or tissue boxes, different size marbles We kicked off the school year with a student created product package depicting student attributes. Students selected their mode of presentation from a variety of choices. Some chose to be writers, directors, actor/actresses, while others presented their product as a live commercial, or puppet commercial. A big thank you to family members and neighborhoods that help make these films possible. Remember the process is an important product. Each student stretched themselves in some way. PHYSICS AND THE LAWS OF MOTION – Let’s explore the minds of Sir Isaac Newton and Einstein. Students will be a part of a Design Team to build an original skate park. Each team will be come very familiar with a branch of physics called mechanics – the physics of motion. Their goal will be to design the most challenging, exciting and safest skate park and win the support of the investors. The unit will culminate in December (hopefully) with a Skateboard Park Expo. A Twist of Color POETRY ***Send in: empty printer cartridges – Staples gives $3 rebate. We go thru several ink cartridges during the year. Michael’s Coupons – Great for origami paper discount We are involved in a Poetry mini-unit. Students just completed “Color Poetry” to expand their writing abilities and explore figurative language: similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole. Products can be viewed on our website. Students continue to hone their writing skills by investigating their personalities thru composing “I AM” poetry. We continue to focus on exploring “power words”, abstract ideas, colorful and rich word choices as well as figurative language. Look for “I AM” products to come home mounted on mat board for display. Give your time to: recycling projects, library, community clean up, food/clothing drive, scouts projects, animal shelter, nursing home, etc. See attached flyer for information on earning the Presidential Service Award. Deadline for log: April 1. Propaganda – (Standard: Critical Thinking) – We are finishing up a mini-unit on Propaganda. This unit helps students discern subtle messages in advertisements, commercials, arguments, etc. to persuade others. What are Propaganda Techniques? They are the methods and approaches used to spread ideas that further a cause - a political, commercial, religious, or civil cause. Why are they used? To manipulate the readers' or viewers' reason and emotions; to persuade you to believe in something or someone, buy an item, or vote a certain way Chess Tournament for all students- October 20th Greater Atlanta Christian School, Play students in your own grade $20.00 registration fee. WDBS Congratulations! Our 1st Production Crew completed its volunteer job on the morning news crew. They did an awesome job! Crew #2 has been trained and are transitioning nicely. Parents, you are more than welcome to come view the 8:15 a.m. news show in rm. #450Horizons 5th gr. students volunteer for three months as production crew. Problem Solving – Mathematical minds delved into varied strategies weekly as they stretch to uncover solutions to math puzzles. Electronic portfolios are being created by your child in preparation for the spring student-led conference for Horizons.
