Pro Forma Index Review Files

Dow Jones Indexes Operations Team

Index Review Client Notification Timeline

  • Final index review changes (i.e.: component additions/deletions and changes to shares outstanding, float factors, industry classifications and weight factors) are announced after the close of trading on the second Friday of March, June, September and December.
  • Changes are implemented following the close of trading on the third Friday of the quarterly review months.
  • Delivery options include email and FTP.
  • Dow Jones Indexes produces pro forma tracking files on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday prior to the implementation date.
  • The pro forma files are produced for a limited number of indexes, but can be expanded based on customer demand.

What are Pro Forma Index Review Files?

  • Pro forma index review files are the standard end-of-day component file reflecting the quarterly review changes.
    • The files are presented in the same structure and format as the standard end-of-day files to allow clients to systematically process index changes.
  • Price adjustments such as stock splits or rights offerings are adjusted in the pro forma file on the day the action becomes effective in order to accurately reflect changes in market capitalization.
  • Pro forma files are updated between 7:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M. New York City time and are posted to the Dow Jones Indexes FTP site.

Format of the Pro Forma Files

  • CRNyyyymmdd.csv files contain the index components as of the effective date of rebalance with closing prices from the current day.
  • CRAyyyymmdd.csv files are identical to the CRNyyyymmdd.csv file but contain CUSIP identifier.
    • Clients must be licensed to receive CUSIP information with the CUSIP Service Bureau.
  • The Dow Jones Indexes FTP file specification document provides an in-depth look into the file structure and is located on the Client Services site:

Advantages of Pro Forma Files

  • Clients can monitor the component weightings with updated closing prices and track late corporate actions leading up to the rebalance date.
  • The files utilize the same structure as the standard end-of-day files so clients can systematically process index changes on a quarterly basis.
  • The Dow Jones Indexes client support team is staffed 24-hours a day to answer questions regarding the pro forma files or any other index review question.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When do pro forma index review files become available to clients?
    • Pro forma index review files are updated and created daily on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday leading up to the effective date of each quarterly rebalance date. Files will be posted to the Dow Jones FTP site between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM New York City time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are there any differences between the standard end-of-day files versus the pro forma index review files?
    • The pro forma files contain the same structure as the end-of-day files. The only differences are the naming convention and that the files include component changes that will be implemented at the quarterly rebalancing.
  • Does the name of the file change on a daily basis?
    • No, the name of the pro forma file will not change. The file will be automatically overwritten on a daily basis using closing pricing from the current day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does the pro forma file account for a component that has a stock split or rights offering in addition to a previously announced shares outstanding change?
    • Companies that have a price adjustment such as stock splits or rights offerings will be adjusted in the pro forma files on the ex-date of the event. If the shares outstanding for the company are also being updated with the quarterly review, the share change will be updated to include the corporate action.
    • Information related to stock splits or rights offerings for index components are included in the splits file that is sent with the final index review results on the second Friday of each quarter or via our corporate action watch lists.
