Response to… • Abolitionists: thrilled, but believed it should’ve gone further; upset that Lincoln had no freed ALL slaves • Northern Dems: angered by president’s decision; claimed it would make war last longer by continuing to anger the South • Union Soldiers: welcomed it • White Southerners: rage; mad that slaves were running away • African Americans: rushed to join Union army; showed great courage on the battlefield & wore uniforms with pride
