  1. Build Your Base:How to Increase Membership in Your Org • . • Adrienne Hypolite • Student Involvement • Transition Programs Coordinator

  2. 3 Steps to Base Building • Step 1: Outreach Strategy • Step 2: Message • Step 3: Recruitment

  3. Outreach Strategy • ID Potential Members • Develop Allies • Keep Them Around

  4. Potential Members • Where to find them • Targeted vs Non-Targeted Outreach

  5. Develop Allies • Allies: orgs/people with clout who have shared interests with you • Collaborating on projects/events

  6. Keep Them Around • How are you going to follow up? Get them connected? • Who’s on your welcome wagon? • FIRST determine what you will do with them BEFORE recruiting

  7. Message • Who are you as an organization? (2 paths: consistency vs variation) • Sound-bite/Elevator Interview

  8. Who Are You? • Consistency in message • Clearer vision/understanding by folks in and out of the org • Easier to develop a “sound-bite” • Easier to distinguish from other similar orgs

  9. Who Are You? • Variation in Message • Less confining • Easier to highlight specific aspects of your org.

  10. The Sound-Bite • Brief: What would you say in 11 secs? • Truth: Don’t lie! • Energy/Enthusiasm • Positivity

  11. Positivity • Got Negative Public Image? • Community (What value do you add to the community...does not have to be altruistic)

  12. Now YOU try it! • In your group, read the organization’s profile and develop an 11 second message to entice people to join. • Don’t get caught in the details--pick only THE most important things to highlight • 5 minutes to work, 5 minutes to present (Choose a spokesperson)

  13. Recruitment • Variety of methods • Passive vs Active recruiting • Variety of tools

  14. Methods • Tabling • Info Sessions • Social Media • Flyering • Events • Petitioning • Class Raps Any others?

  15. Passive vs Active • Most recruiting we do is passive • Determining passive: the amount of face to face contact with potentials • Active recruiting: put yourself out there and DO WORK!

  16. Tools: The Class Rap • Easy access (professor permission) • Captive audience • 3-5 minutes long • Include when/where/time you’ll be meeting and your contact info • Use the quarter sheet instead of the clipboard

  17. The Quarter Sheet • Name of org, brief blurb, contact info, thanks • List varying degrees of involvement with a check box next to them (from most passive to most active) • Why it’s better than the clipboard

  18. Wanna Be A Beach Bum? The beach bums are an SJSU org concerned with coastal preservation. To this end, we sponsor a lot of events and initiatives, but we also like to have fun! For more info on our org, visit us at www.beachbums.org. “Heck Yea, I wanna get involved! I’m willing to…” ________ I’m a little too busy to make it to a meeting, but I definitely want more information. Sign me up for the list serve! ________ Attend meetings on Monday afternoon at 1pm at Philz, across from the SJSU campus. Great coffee and great conversation—what more can you ask for! ________ Sign up to run the “Takin’ It to the Beach” 5k. I love to run! ________ I’m not a great runner, but I love to plan events!
