Introduction • The Vampire Diaries is about Elena Gilbert(Nina Dobrev), a 17 year old girl who falls for Stephan Salvatore(Paul Wesley), a 162 year old vampire. • The main actors include Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhelder. • The Vampire Diaries are based on the book of the same name. • The pilot episode was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Setting • The Vampire Diaries takes place in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. • The majority of scenes are at night. • The setting in this show creates a feeling of mystery, fear, and suspense.
Character: Elena Gilbert • The character of Elena is played by Nina Dobrev. • Elena is the protagonist of the Vampire Diaries by her being caught in the middle of a love triangle with Stephan and Damon Salvatore. • Her best friends include Bonnie Bennet and Caroline Forbes. • She also has a little brother named Jeremy Gilbert.
Character: Stephan Salvatore • Stephan is another protagonist in the Vampire Diaries. • He is a 162 year old vampire who falls for Elena Gilbert because she resembles his lost love Katherine Petrova(secondary antagonist, Elena’s doppelgänger). • He is caught in a love triangle with his older, blood thirsty brother Damon, for Elena. • Unlike other vampires, Stephan tries not to drink the blood of humans.
Character: Damon Salvatore • Damon is the main antagonist of the Vampire Diaries. • He is Stephan’s older, more vicious, and malevolent brother. • Damon is much different than Stephan in that Damon only drinks the blood of humans. • He is the last piece to the love triangle between him and Stephen over Elena.
‘Teen Issues’ • The Vampire Diaries shows the teen issues of drinking, drugs, and teen relationships. • This show displays these issues in both negative and positive ways. For example, a negative display is when they show Jeremy smoking. A positive display is when Elena is trying to convince Jeremy to stop smoking.
Viewers • The premiere of the first episode of the Vampire Diaries had 4.91 million viewers and the last episode had 3.47 million viewers. • I think this show is so successful because it’s basically a television version of Twilight.
Comparison • I’m comparing the Vampire Diaries to the show 90210. • The pilot episode of 90210 had a lesser 4.65 million viewers compared to the 4.91 million viewers for the Vampire Diaries. • I think that the Vampire Diaries is more popular because it creates suspenseful moments, then releases the suspense at the correct times. • I myself enjoyed the Vampire Diaries more because it was different than the other teen drama shows on television today. • I think 90210 is more teen friendly because it has more realistic problems and characters.
