  2. Non-Destructive Testing is an extensive category of testing methods used in various industries and science. It is defined as the separation of a component from its environment to reveal its nature, properties, and characteristics. Basically, it is a form of examination and experiment which enables scientists to determine the potential behavior of a material under controlled conditions. In addition, it helps to understand the behavior of the different materials and systems without no incurring any sort of damage to them. Non-destructive inspection is a series of techniques applied in numerous scientific disciplines to test the characteristics of a material, part, or system at ambient temperature and pressure, without causing any damage to them.

  3. The primary purpose of such inspection is to find out about the nature, properties, and features of a material or a system by performing a series of physical and chemical tests. There are many types of non-destructive testing like radar, eddy current testing, electromagnetic testing, vibration testing, impact testing, resistivity testing, radiofrequency testing, and the like.

  4. Know the two basic methods of inspections While performing non-destructive testing, two types of methods are generally applied for the inspection. One method uses high-frequency sound waves to generate a map of the material's internal structure. The other method uses a magnetic component to create a virtual image of the object by creating a virtual model of it using a magnetic field. Both types of methods use a measuring device to acquire information about the material or component at the interface. The penetration testing of non-magnetic surfaces can be performed with the help of electrical and mechanical interlocking testing machines.

  5. High-frequency sound waves and magnetic field generators produce images of materials by producing eddy currents. The high-frequency sound waves penetrate deep into the material to emit energy which produces electric fields which are detected by the sensitive inspection equipment. There are a variety of techniques that may be used for this kind of inspection ranging from the non-destructive testing of loose-fill material using magnetic rod and eddy current machines to the inspection of welded components using high current and high-frequency machines. The complete volumetric inspection test procedure involves a series of laboratory tests conducted in conjunction with computer modeling and computer imaging. This is a very specialized kind of inspection and the accuracy level can only be attained if the technicians have expert training in the application of the various techniques and their specific applications. Therefore it is mandatory for manufacturers of complete volumetric products to hire the services of a reputed firm for the purpose of performing non-destructive testing.

  6. How does ultrasonic testing can be used for inspection? Ultrasonic testing, apart from providing a detailed examination of a component, can also provide guidance on the level of wear and tear on a component. In the case of non-destructive testing, ultrasonic testing can identify flaws using low-frequency sound waves. If any flaw is found in the specified area, it can be repaired by replacing that portion with the original or by repairing any other part of the component using the spare part. However, if any damage is done to the entire component, then it becomes impossible to repair that portion and that entire component would have to be thrown out. High-frequency sound waves are used for non-destructive testing to detect the amount of magnetic flux leakage in a component. NDT is used for a number of purposes apart from inspection. NDT can be used to examine the presence of a discontinuity in a component.

  7. Any discontinuity in a component can make it susceptible to severe fatigue cracking. Thus the testing methodologies for NDT include the magnetic flux leakage test, the non-destructive test, strain gauging, and tensile testing. All these types of non-destructive testing methods are important for the inspection of electrical assemblies. The accuracy of such inspections depends on the skill of the inspectors as well as the equipment used for the inspection process.
