  1. Spirituality:Completing the Circle of Quality Patient Care Rachel Girard, MS, MTS, RN, CDE Diabetes Nurse Specialist Maine Medical Center Portland, ME

  2. What is spirituality? How does it differ from religion?

  3. Spirituality is…. • a dimension of the human person through which one understands meaning and purpose in life • concerned with relationships--to oneself, fellow human beings, the universe, and to God or a Higher Power

  4. Why is this happening to me?

  5. I believe things happen for a reason.

  6. Why should health professionals be attentive to spirituality?

  7. “Because it is who I am at my deepest core. It is what makes me an individual. When I go to the hospital, my roommate often has the same disease, the same hospital gown, the same chemotherapy, and the same doctor. What makes us different is our spirit. It is unique to each of us. And I want my doctor to know who I am---body, mind and spirit.”

  8. Florence Nightingale talked about nursing that “VITAL FORCE”

  9. Attention to spirituality… • often contributes to an increase quality of life for patients • allows health professionals to more appropriately target their interventions

  10. Maine Medical Center is committed to the concept of Safe Patient and Family-Centered Care.

  11. Religion includes…. • a particular body of beliefs or doctrines regarding one’s relationship with God or a Higher Power • the rites and rituals which provide a concrete way of expressing spirituality

  12. What does having diabetes mean to you and your family?? • “Sh_ _ happens”. • “My mother died shortly after starting insulin”. • “God’s punishing me for abusing my body”. • “I needed a good wake-up call”. • “My diabetes is a blessing in disguise”. • “My diabetes is a gift”.

  13. “As productive and brilliant as he was, he was also self-destructive….He said God gave him MS to slow him down. This disease saved his life”.Jennifer Lee Pryor

  14. The Diagnosis of DM is a “Marking Moment” in One’s Life “Illness is both soul-shaking and soul-evoking for the patient and for all others for whom the patient matters. We lose an innocence, we know vulnerability, we are no longer who we were before this event, and we will never be the same”. Bolen, JS, “Close to the Bone: Life Threatening Illness and the Search for Meaning”

  15. Getting to the answers….. • What’s important to you? • What do you care most about? • How has your diabetes affected the way you live/view your life? • What part of having diabetes are you struggling with? • Who can you count on for support? • How have you and your family dealt with “tough times” in the past?

  16. About Me……

  17. About Me……

  18. About Me……
