  1. How to respond to art and Design

  2. So what should we see when looking at a painting ? Transparent quality of the wine glass, makes it almost merge with the background Patterned background contrasts with the plain table top. Square textural brushstrokes The ellipse of the compotier dish is inaccurate Cool blue colours in the background are complimentary to the orange, warm colours of the fruit The back edge of the table almost divides the composition in half Dark table top contrasts with the white cloth to help it standout. Variations of colours and tones applied to make the fruit look solid and 3D Still life with compotier 1880 oil on canvas By Paul Cezanne Textural directional brushstrokes coloured shadows to show the folds in the white cloth Dark shadows Direction of light shows the foreground to be lighter. Diagonal placement of the knife and the cloth ,leads your eye into the composition Almost triangular arrangement for a composition It is important to note the media used in an artwork, in this case oil paint on canvas.

  3. Composition This is a concept that sometimes confuses people but it is actually straight forward, it just means where everything is positioned in a work. In other words a combination of composed and position. In design the same concept is called layout. An example of three different compositions of the same view. This still life painting has a triangular composition Artists use composition to lead the viewers over their artwork in a specific way to create impact or tell a story.

  4. What do we mean when we use the word Media In Art & Design the word Media or Medium simply refers to the materials used to create the design or art work. Most paintings are referred to as oil on canvas which just means oil paint on a stretched canvas surface. This collage has been created using a variety of media so can be referred to as mixed media. This sculptural goblet is made in the medium of clay The media used for these bowls are paper mache and acrylic paint. This landscape painting by Van Gogh uses thick oil paint on a canvas stretched over a wooden frame. As the paint is very thick and textural, it can be referred to as impasto. Pen and ink drawing

  5. The choice of media is important to the overall look and mood of the work and also the way it is used This ink drawing has been done in a loose expressive, messy way Whereas this drawing has been very carefully drawn to make it as realistic as possible. This portrait has been done using watercolour and the artist has chosen not to completely finish the work and has deliberately left out finished detail round the edge of the face and hair to make you look more at the features of the face. This drawing has been done using charcoal to give a more spontaneous sketchy feel to the work.

  6. Design Studies Although the visual elements are also important when responding to design, there are other issues to consider. • .Aesthetics the overall look of a design or style • .Function and fitness for purpose whether a design actually works • .Target market who the design is aimed at • .Materials and media what it is made of • .Techniques and/or technology how the design has been created. • .Scale the size of the design work • . Text/Layout any lettering and how the imagery and text is positioned in the design. • .Imagery/surface decoration pictures and images that illustrate and patterns or decorative additions to the design. • .Inspirations/influences where the designer get their ideas from.

  7. So what should we look for in an example of graphic design ? Layout- the title takes up the centre of the poster combined with the simple imagery. At the top in small print, lists the main actors in bold text and smaller for the rest. There is a strap line in white text at the top which balances the white used in the figures and further text at the foot of the poster to again balance the design. Strong use of red for the background plus black and white as a contrast keeping it minimal but bold to create impact. Zigzag of lines to represent the fire escape stairs on a New York housing block. Typography Bold, large, black capital letters aligned to the left of the poster Imagery very simple as white silhouetted figures against the red background in dancing poses similar to some of the dances scenes in the film. Rough style of font either stencilled or block printed to look uneven , and hand done and create texture The most eye catching elements to this poster are the main title of the film and then the white silhouetted figures. This simplistic style is typical of Saul Bass and also is typical of the 1960’s. Strong bold lettering represents a building shape Variation in the sizing of the text to make it more solid and not leave gaps Film Poster for the musical , West Side Story designed by Saul Bass 1961

  8. Still life with Compotier 1880 oil on canvas By Paul Cezanne Comment on how the artist has responded to this still life. In your answer ,refer to .Composition .Colour .Media Handling What is your opinion of this style of painting ? Give two justified reasons 10
