TheclothingsectorkeptthrivingduringtheMughalempireandtheBritishRajinIndiaasBengalandGujratemergedasthemainproductionhubs. Cottonyarnandjutecontinuetobethemainstayoftheindustrywithartificialfibres,suchasnylonandpolyesterenteringthemarketintheearly20thcentury. • Whatarethekeycomponentsofthetextile industry in India? • Thebasicstructureoftheclothingsectorcomprisesofthefollowingcomponents: • Spinning:Thisistheprocessofconvertingcottonorartificialfibreintoweavableyarn. • Weaving:Knittingorweavingconvertstheyarnintofabric.Thissectorconsistsof • 3.9millionhandloomsand380000‘powerlooms’. • Fabricfinishing:Theprocessingpriortothemanufacturingofclothincludesdyeing,printing,andotherclothpreparationtechniques.Thereareabout2300processorsinIndia. • Finishedclothing:Thereareapproximately77000domesticmanufacturers,exporters,andsubcontractorsengagedintheproductionofapparel. • Compositemills:Thesearerelativelylargeset-upswherespinning,weaving,andattimesfabricatingaredoneunderoneroof.

Afteragriculture,textileisIndia’sforemostindustryemployingaround4.5crorepeople.Therearemorethan35Lakhshandloomworkersspreadacrossthecountry.Thesectorcontributesnearly14%ofthetotalindustrialproductionandaccountsforabout30%oftotalexports. India’sclothingindustryisgrowingataCAGRof10%andisexpectedtotouch $190billionby2025-26 Thelargestcottonproducerintheworld,Indiaproducedmorethan36millionbalesofcottonduringtheproductionseasonof2021-22.Exportsoftextileandapparelstoodatapproximately$44billioninFY22. Theindustryattractedalmost$4billioninFDIfromApr2000-Mar2022. InMay2022,theMSMEministryinauguratedtheCenterofExcellenceforKhadi(CoEK)atDelhitoproduceinnovativefabricsandgarmentsforthedomesticandoverseasmarket. Atotalof$1.62billionwasallocatedtothetextileindustryinthe2022-23unionbudget. IndustryExpertscanguideyouinfindingasuitableclothingmanufacturing companyinIndia.
