Structure of HE in Demark The higher education system Higher education institutions can be grouped into two different sectors: the university sector and the college sector, i.e. the professionally oriented higher education sector. Students in Danish higher education work independently and exercise their own initiative. As well as attending traditional lectures, they study in small groups where they are expected to make active contributions. Part of their studies consist of independent project and research work. Most degree courses are self-contained, and students choose their field of specialization when commencing their studies. All program include the preparation of either a major project report, a thesis or a dissertation, depending on the level of the degree. Colleges Specialized colleges and centers for higher education/university colleges offer 3-4 year professional bachelor  programs in fields such as business, education, engineering and nursing. Theoretical studies, practical training through work placements and a bachelor project are always part of the program. Universities The universities have a commitment to teach and do research at the highest international level. Some are multi-faculty institutions covering many disciplines and some are specialized in specific fields. Universities offer Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D program: 3-year bachelor program (BSc/BA) followed by 2-year candidatus program (MSc/MA) and 3-year PhD program. A bachelor program qualifies for occupational functions and further studies, and most students continue in a candidatus program.

Institutions of higher education • 8 research-intensive universities - with around 100,000 students • 12 university-level institutions of fine arts, architecture, music, etc - with around 6,000 students • 18 university colleges + a few specialised colleges - with around 70,000 students • 17 academies of professional higher education - with around 18,000 students

8. Number of domestic and international students The higher education institutions vary in size from 1,000 to 40,000 students. More than 12,000 international students are enrolled in Danish higher education institutions.
