  2. Today we will… • Identify the problems of slum housing in Scotland’s cities • Understand why these problems made people unhealthy

  3. Before we learn about all the new types of housing in Scotland, we need to understand why change was needed during the 20th century • This lesson will provide us with evidence of all the problems of slum housing

  4. A Glasgow Tenement, 1868 • Glue the picture of the tenement into your jotter under this heading • A series of labels will now come up on the board which you will add to the picture

  7. What might this house have we can’t see? • Shared toilets • Single room for whole families • High rent • No running water • No electricity

  8. Why did people put up with these homes? During the 19th and 20th centuries many people moved to towns and cities for work. This meant there was a shortage of decent housing and people were forced into slum housing where the rent was expensive despite terrible conditions.

  9. Mind Map Task • Using ‘Slum Housing’ as your title, create a mind map which lists all the problems of Glasgow slums • The list on page 6 of the housing booklet should make up the content of your mind map
