Avoid band 4 with comparison throughout 1st paragraph – language in the 1st poem. 2nd paragraph – language in the 2nd poem with comparisons to the first throughout 3rd paragraph – structure in both (compare!) 4th paragraph – themes / ideas in both (compare!) Basically, every point you make should be linked to the other poem with at least a comparative phrase.

PLAN IT! • Read the poems with the question in mind: • Pick 1 excellent quote from each to dissect for language – underline this in each poem and note the techniques (easiest: sibilant or plosive?) • Structure? Consider punctuation in the line you’ve chosen (easiest: end-stopped or enjambment?). Arrangement of stanzas? Rhyme scheme? Link to the question • Themes / ideas – which words/techniques reveal this? Link to the question

PLAN IT! • Read the poem with the question in mind – you need 3 strong quotes which can be picked apart: start, middle and end • Annotate on the poem – 1. what is the writer’s attitude about the question topic (connotations of words etc) 2. how does the writer reveal this (techniques used + effect) • Annotate all 3 quotes with attitude and techniques, then all you need to do is write it up (remember band 5 analysis, band 6 evaluation)

What are the poet’s feelings about the city? How are these feelings conveyed to the reader? • Read Eating Poetry. What is the poet saying about imagination? How does he present these ideas?
