  3. Definition • Herpes is defined as an inflammatory virus disease, characterized by the eruption of small blisters on the skin and mucous membrane • Is a Sexually Transmitted Disease • Is a viral STD along with HIV, HPV, and AIDS

  4. History • Comes from the Greek word “Herpes” meaning to creep • First described in 1736 in both males and females • Roman Emperor Tiberius tried to eliminate the disease by making kissing and intercourse illegal

Types • There are more than 70 infectious types of herpes • 5 main types • Herpes Simplex Virus 1- appears on the mouth and lips in the form of fever blisters and cold sores • Herpes Simplex Virus 2- causes genital herpes while also affecting the mouth • Herpes Simplex Virus 3- known as VZV (varicella-zoster virus) varicella meaning chickenpox and zoster meaning shingles • Herpes Simplex Virus 4- Epstein Barr Virus • Herpes Simplex Virus 5- Cytomegabvirus CMV

Causes • Sexual Intercourse • Skin to Skin contact • Includes kissing, oral sex, and the passing of the virus to babies at birth • Blood to Blood contact • Medical Accident • Includes needle sticks, biohazard accidents • Herpes may be passed from the genital area to the mouth through touching. To prevent this avoid touching the area and wash hands thoroughly after contact.

Effects and Symptoms • After Herpes has been contracted there is usually a one to two week period in which the symptoms will show up. • After that the blisters will re-occur anywhere from once a week to only a few outbreaks per year depending on the person. • Can appear at any age includingyoung children • Forms clusters of blisters on a reddened area of skin • Cluster eventually break to form sores • Popped blisters may take 2-4 weeks to heal the first time the occur • Blisters may cause itching, bleeding, and general discomfort. • www.abcpedia.com/virus/herpes-genital.htm • May form one large ulcer which is medically referred to as a herpetic lesion • Lymph-nodes in the affected area swell and become painful • First outbreak may be accompanied by fever and flu-like symptoms • Clusters may appear anywhere on skin or mucous membranes • No symptoms may occur at all but that does not mean it is ok to have sexual intercourse www.abcpedia.com/virus/herpes-genital.htm

Diagnosis/Treatment • Many doctors can give an accurate reading of herpes just by looking at the effected area. • Tissue samples may be taken and tested in the lab. • A Syphilis Dark field test can help rule out other diseases. • A pap test can help diagnose herpes • There are drugs that can help reduce the swelling of blisters and reduce pain. -Acyclour (Zovirou) -Famaclover (Famvir) -Valacyclovir (Valtrex) • Many rubbing creams and pharmaceutical pain relievers are also available

Future Outlook and Research • Currently there is no cure for the Herpes simplex virus strain • Scientists are currently looking into a more permanent cure that will cause Herpes carries less outbreaks over extended periods of time • They expect to have a vaccine that will cure 70% to 90% of adults currently carrying the Herpes strains. • Pharmaceutical companies are also researching on new creams and oral pills that will help control the Herpes strains.

Important Facts!!! • 1 in 5 American teenagers/adults are infected with genital herpes. • 1 in 4 women infected with HSV-2 • Since the 1970’s genital herpes has increased 30% nationwide • Yearly cost of treating STD’s in the United States is 17 billion dollars. • 45 million people 12 and over nationwide have contracted genital herpes. • Prevent transmitting herpes by practicing safe sex or abstinence
