  1. Cancer Patients and IT Tools

  2. Cancer Patients and IT Tools IT has a great impact on health care. IT helps organize patients records and provides websites where patients and health care providers can better understand a particular disease. IT advantages being used in the medical field include EMR’s, eMedicine, and Machinery like CAT scan, MRI, Mammography, etc. There are over 100 types of cancers an these machines are used to detect the type of condition a patient has.

  3. Preventative Tools • Breast Cancer • At home self breast exam feeling for lumps in the breast tissue. • Mammogram – X-ray taken of a woman’s breast in search of dark colored masses or lumps.

  4. Colon Cancer • A stool sample is taken and inspected under microscope for traces of blood. • If blood is found, a colonoscopy is preformed. • A small camera is inserted into the colon to look for polyps and other abnormalities.

  5. Prostate Cancer During routine physicals Doctors will do a finger exam feeling for an enlargement in the prostate. If it is found to be enlarged, the doctor will then test the patients blood in search of high PSA.

  6. LUMA Cervical Imaging

  7. ViziLite Plus with TBlue630VELSCOPE

  8. Tools for Treating Cancer Patients • Chemotherapy • Mastectomy • Radiation

  9. NeoPlas • Chemotherapy • Lovastatinand Interferon • Stop growth and spread of cancer cells http://www.prweb.com/releases/NeoPlas/cancer_treatment/prweb3014134.html

  10. Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) • Surgical Catheters for easy-access in treatment • Minimal side effects http://thoracicsurgery.stanford.edu/patient_care/lung_cancer.html

  11. RapidArc • Precise Radiation Application • Nearly Instant Treatment http://medgadget.com

  12. Tracking Study done by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center found that patients could improve the quality of care they were given by tracking their symptoms and side effects of treatments on the Symptom Tracking and Reporting (STAR) website A similar study done by Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center found that patients who use PDAs to track their symptoms find it easier to communicate with their doctors about their symptoms.

  13. Tracking Massachusetts General Hospital researchers have started a study on a device called the CTC-chip in studying non-small cell lung cancer. This chip analyzes the tumor cells circulating in a patient’s blood. The Moffitt Cancer Center uses Total Cancer Care when treating their patients. This means that they use evidence-based medicine with information technology, scientific studies, and health outcomes to better care for their patients.

  14. Research • caCorrect • Raw data → Normalized data → Variance Calculation → Noise Heat Map → Outlier Probe Detection → Binary Artifact Mask → Renormalization → Clean Data http://www.miblab.gatech.edu/?q=content/cacorrect-demo-video

  15. Research • Microarray Explorer • Data mining facility • Analyzes the expression of genes in real time • Can be viewed as an image, report, histogram, scatter plot, expression profile plot, and cluster analysis plot. • Used to find the causes of tumors http://www.ccrnp.ncifcrf.gov/MAExplorer/

  16. Research • Cancer Disease Specific Array • Data mining program • Determines cancer patterns
