  1. Main Causes of Tooth Sensitivity and Preventive Steps You Can Take Today How much do you know about dental sensitivity? It’s a common problem affecting approximately one in seven adults. It is on the increase among young adults, a prime reason to be concerned about it. Understanding the causes for this problem will help you apply appropriate preventive measures. Has Origin in Dentin Dental sensitivity occurs when you experience a brief, intense twinge in your teeth when they are exposed to external stimuli such as hot, cold, sweet, acidic foods and beverages or tactile pressure. Tooth sensitivity has its origins in dentin, the inner part of a tooth. Dentin has millions of tiny tubules that connect to the nerve at the center of the tooth. Normally, dentin is protected by tooth enamel, gums and tooth cementum. The problem arises when the tooth loses this protection. Without protection, dentin is exposed to external stimuli which can then reach nerve endings and trigger sensitivity. Enamel Wear and Erosion A number of situations can lead to exposed dentin and thus, dental sensitivity. The most common is when the protective layer of enamel wears off or when gums recede. This may be due to a person’s lifestyle and oral care routine. For example, overzealous brushing or using an abrasive toothpaste can lead to enamel wear. Frequently partaking acidic food or beverages (carbonated drinks, wine and foods containing citrus ingredients) can also cause enamel erosion. Applying excessive force while chewing food (such as in occlusal trauma), teeth grinding and poor eating habits are other reasons for exposed dentin. Gum Recession and Other Reasons Certain dental procedures can also leave you vulnerable to dental sensitivity. For example, a periodontal surgery involving gum removal can lead to gum recession. Dental treatments such as orthodontics, professional cleaning can also cause gum reason. Another cause is the indiscriminate use of teeth whitening products and treatments. Sometimes, the cause can be job related – when a person is a wine taster, for example. It can also occur when the person is suffering from psychological problems such as anorexia, bulimia or has stomach disorders. Preventive Steps for Immediate Application There are some preventive measures you can take right away to protect your teeth from dental sensitivity. Start by restricting your intake of acidic food and drink. Use a non-abrasive toothpaste and use gentle brushing techniques. Don’t be indiscriminate with teeth whitening
