  4. SNAP-ED What is SPLASH Shaping Positive Lifestyles and Attitudes through School Health (SPLASH) is an initiative of the Michigan Nutrition Network, which is focused on bringing quality nutrition and physical education to Michigan’s low income schools.  By providing quality health education and physical education curricular programs to schools with the greatest needs, SPLASH is reducing disparity in the delivery of these valuable lessons and skill development.

  5. Where does the money come from? USDA- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-ED) Michigan Dept. of Human services Other programs—Not applicable Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF) Through Reimbursement process Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH)-SPLASH project Through Reimbursement process ISDs- SPLASH Coordinating sites Through Reimbursement process LOCAL SPLASH SCHOOL

  6. WHAT IS THE GOAL? • Students will eat fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk products every day • Students will be physically active every day as part of a healthy lifestyle • Students will balance caloric intake from food and beverages with calories expended

  7. SPLASH YEARLY TIMELINES • SPLASH is a year-to-year project. Project Years are October 1 – September 30. • Intent to Participate: districts are asked in the late Spring of the previous year to get Intent to Apply commitments from schools. This includes the estimate of how many teachers will be in the program, their grade level, and if they will need training. • Salary and Fringe Forms: In late August/early Septemeber SPLASH requests Salary and Fringe information from schools. This information is used as the match for the grant funds (the teachers time @ their salary/fringe = match). This also informs the project of who needs training, what teachers FOR SURE are in the project, and what grades FOR SURE they will be teaching that year, and so on… • October 1, START DATE: No more reimbursements from the previous year can be paid. A new project year has begun. • October-December Training: We do our very best to get any teacher that needs to be trained in Michigan Model or EPEC trained in these months. This is the time of year you will be doing most of the invoicing for subs and mileage. • Spring: This is the time of year schools usually do their Family Connection Events. You will be invoicing the ISD for reimbursement of approved items for the event, given we have itemized receipts. (Teachers must submit a preapproval form for these events, and ONLY approved items will be reimbursed).

  8. SPLASH is not a curriculum, it is a funding source • $PLASH allows the ISD to pay for your school’s: • Michigan Model for Health training and curriculum for grades K-6 and grades 7-12 just the nutrition and physical activity modules • And, for your PE teachers for grades K-5 to receive theNutritionally Enhanced EPEC (Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum) training and curriculum.

  9. SPLASH Perks • The ISD, through SPLASH funding, can reimburse your school for subs so teachers can attend training • Also, we reimburse your school for the mileage teacher use to come to training MUST HAVE TEACHER SIGN TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENT FORM, WHICH REQUIRES ODOMETER READINGS and BLUE INK • Reimbursement for a sub for teacher to take a • Curriculum-Integration Day MUST INCLUDE REQUIRED FORM FROM TEACHER WITH THE INVOICE • Reimbursement for a Family Connection Event MUST INCLUDE THE REQUIRED FORM AND ALL ITEMIZED RECEIPTS

  10. OTHER SPLASH perks • For this project year 10/01/11 through 9/30/12, teachers needing to be trainedwill only receive the “perks” from the last slides. • Teachers previously trained in their grade level in the revised Michigan Model or K-5 EPEC will be provided, by the EUPISD, a bundle of nutrition classroom materials valuing $200!

  11. Teachers Duties Teach the MM lessons Will fill out logs monthly, representing nutrition and physical activity lessons (Sign in BLUE INK) Give their SIGNED monthly logs to the designated log collector in the building, on time (admin will appoint) Participate in planning and providing a Family Connection Event Complete a survey at the end of the year (short and online) Please note: Even if teachers did not teach any lessons that month, they still need to send in the log

  12. LOG COLLECTORS • Each school needs a log collector. This person is responsible for collecting monthly logs and getting them to the administrator to sign, and then ensuring they get to the ISD on time. • There is a small 1 time fee given at the end of the project year. The ISD issues the check for this. • Fee varies between $50 and $200 depending on school size and efficiency

  13. Administrators Duties Ensure Michigan Model lessons are taught Sign all monthly logs and other required forms in BLUE INK Ensure there is a Log Collector designated in the building Support and promote a Family Connection Event Ensure the Business Office receives information pertinent to invoicing and other needs

  14. Your Role as a Business Office • Ensure sure to invoice the EUPISD for the costs listed on the previous slides (subs, mileage, etc…) • Ensure Travel reimbursement forms are completed and signed with blue ink, and that odometer readings are included. • Ensure that curriculum integration day forms (Teachers should have these, and they are found on the website) are with the invoice for Curriculum Integration Days. • Ensure that all ITEMIZED receipts are attached to invoices when applicable (Family Connection Event purchases) • Questions on invoices should go to TRACY MCCORD
