Saul (&Elaine)Bass-Research into the history of opening title sequences! By Immy
About Saul(&Elaine) Bass • Saul Bass once said “I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares, as opposed to ugly things. That’s my intent.”—SAUL BASS. This quote reflects among his work with opening titles, particularly in the design and rhythm of some of the sequences I have seen that he has created. • Elaine bass was born in 1927 and was an American title designer and film maker, she worked alongside Saul Bass for 40 years and married to him in 1961. • Saul bass born 1920 was an American graphic designer and Oscar winning film maker. Bass designed some of the most iconic cooperate logos in north America; such as the bell system logo-1969 and the AT&T’s globe logo 1983. • In the following slides I will be discussing some of the opening title sequences they created…
PHYSCHO-1960-I think I must have one of those faces you can’t help believing-Norman Bates. Bass does not give his audience much to work with. Like the minimalists who came before him and his modernist contemporaries, Bass’ favourite idea for opening titles was usually the shortest He used several simple white bars to introduce the directors, actors, production company etc, and then they would be escorted them back out again. Although these lines come from different angles and parts of the screen, they never once break formation or intersect which makes it very linear and straightforward. It goes On, off, left, right, up, down, black, white and those were Bass’s self-imposed restrictions on Psycho, and he employs them with dramatic effect. There are two major themes running through Physcho and these are contrast and tension. There is also loud, dramatic and scary diegetic music playing in the back of this sequence. Bass did this to create the horror theme through the sound, rather than the visual sequence. https://youtu.be/hwq1XHtJEHw

Elaine Bass • Elaine was also a huge part of Saul's career, she met him in 1955 and began working with him. Elaine and Paul married, after Saul had finished an opening sequence for ’Spartacus.’ • A lot of Saul's work was joint or influenced by Elaine and co-directed. • They had two children, Jennifer-1964 and Jeffery-(1967). • After they had children they decided to focus just on short films and opening sequences, but most importantly they focus on raising a family. • After getting an Oscar for their short film-’Why a man creates’ they moved on from main titles and perused a career in film making.
