Join us in exploring vital resources and tools available for teaching assistants (TAs) and research assistants (RAs) at UOIT. This session will cover how to prepare for research effectively, including using the library website, RefWorks, citation tools, interlibrary loans, and various databases. You'll learn practical strategies like organizing your research, retrieving and evaluating information, and proper citation methods. We will also discuss the importance of finding multidisciplinary content and specialized databases for your research needs.

Agenda • Preparing for research • Overview of library website • RefWorks • Citation finding tools • Interlibrary loan/RACER • Books and e-books • Multidisciplinary databases • Google Scholar • Web of Science • Journal Citation Reports • Dissertations Databases • Specialized content • Statistics and Data, Legal, Government, Business
Four Steps • Get Organized and Prepare for Research • Find and Retrieve Information • Evaluate and Select • Present and Cite
humans pigs transmission pandemics Swine Flu treatment Public health symptoms policy prevention Step One: Get Organized!
Target Search humans pigs Books, articles transmission pandemics Swine Flu treatment Articles, websites Public health symptoms policy prevention articles Government website
Break down your thesis statement • While the Swine Flu outbreak is not truly a pandemic, the risk of mutation requires the development of a vaccine to take place immediately. • Swine flu • Pandemic • Mutation • Vaccine
Draft thesis statement • Tells us what we ARE looking for • Indicators of mutation • Considerations for public health • Criteria for pandemic • Development of vaccine • Tells us what we’re NOT looking for • Impact on tourism industry • Impact on schools and daycares • Restrictions on consumption of pork
RefWorks • Create an account on a virtual server • Create virtual folders for storing citations • Add citations • RefGrabIt • Import from databases/indexes • Format in-text citations; create bibliography
RefWorks is NOT perfect • You need to proofread • It’s just a (good!) starting point… RefWorks Group Code = RWUOIT
Using google to find the link to write-n-cite • If you use Google to access Write-n-Cite, be sure to select the “Scholars Portal” access • If you download from the RefWorks corporate page, the program will not work properly.
Importing to refworks • Depends on the database you are using! • Instructions for various databases can be found here: http://www.uoit.ca/EN/library/main/research_help/404822/404831/refworks.html
