  3. The life cycle of a penguin A penguin mom lays one or two eggs The mom and dad take turns hatching the chick When the penguin grows up it finds a mate and stays with it for life the mother penguin soon starts to lay eggs of her own When the chick hatches it is covered in down which is replaced by feathers as it gets older

  4. Penguins are birds • Penguins are birds with black and white feathers but unlike most birds penguins can not fly. They spend most of their time under water looking for food. When they are in the water swimming they flap their wings and they look like they are flying.

  5. Temperature • penguins are warm-blooded animals just like we are so this means they can get cold. They have a layer of blubber or “fat” to keep them warm in the icy cold climates

  6. Dinner Time • Penguins eat fish along with squid, and krill. Krill is a tiny animal that lives in the ocean. • Penguins have a hook at the end of their bill to help them catch fish , and backward facing brills on their tongues to keep the seafood from getting away (kind of like built in hooks) • Penguins have to drink saltwater because they don’thave fresh water where they lives so they have a built in filter to filter out all the salt.

  7. Penguin Predators • Leopard seals and sea lions are among the many animals that try to eat penguins from underwater but their white bellies make it hard for them to see them because they blend in with the snow. • Some birds also try to eat penguins from above but their black bodies help them to blend in with the ocean and hide from the birds. • Some on land predators of the penguins would be ferrets, cats, snakes, lizards, foxes and rats.

  8. Playful Pastimes • Penguins love to toboggan through the snow, surf on the waves and dive off the icy cliffs. They even all line up and take turns.
