  1. Anaximander

  2. Basic Information • 610 BC – 546 BC • Lived in Miletus • Studied the teachings of Thales in the Milesian School. Eventually he succeeded Thales and became the second master of the school. • Anaximander is the first philosopher known to have written down his studies • Can be considered first true scientist.

  3. Society • Anaximander was brought up among great thinkers. His time spent studying under Thales acted as a foundation to his theories. • Learning from other great philosophers gave Anaximander background and experience to the field at an early age.

  4. Background to Theory • Anaximander had interest in the universe, particularly its origin. • Claimed that nature is ruled by laws and anything that disturbs the balance of nature does not last. This relates nature to human society. • These beliefs led to the theory of the “boundless”.

  5. Boundless Theory • Anaximander believed that the “boundless” was the origin of all that is. • Apeiron- that which has no boundaries • This theory was unusual because Greek thought is associated with limit, symmetry, and harmony while this theory disregarded that.

  6. Arguments- Reasoning • The boundless has no origin- it is itself the origin. • The origin must be boundless- The boundless is associated with an unending source and an ongoing process must be maintained. • The “long since” argument- If the world had a goal it would have been reached long ago.

  7. Astronomy • Eternal movement of the boundless caused the origin of the heavens. • Had many theories such as: Speculative astronomy, earth floats unsupported in space, celestial bodies make full circles, why the earth doesn’t fall, celestial bodies lie behind one another, order of celestial bodies, celestial bodies as wheels, distances.

  8. View of Universe

  9. Legacy • Anaximander is said to be one of the greatest minds ever to live. • His theory of the boundless made him the first metaphysician. • He also drew a map of the world making him the first geographer. • Most importantly his look into astronomy and the boundless broke the ancient beliefs of the universe and sparked the Western world image of the universe.
