A piece of literature is a product of a particular time and place. In order to appreciate and understand the author’s purpose in writing a piece of literature, you must establish the original context of a work of literature. This includes what was happening historically, physically, as well as culturally during the time of the writer’s life or the time period of the setting of the story. Therefore, the context of some literacy works may be significantly different from the contemporary context in which they live. Context information may be provided in an introduction, a foreword, or a preface; sometimes, it must be researched.
