  3. 1.1 Assessment • BULATS Business Language Testing Service (University of Cambridge, ESOL) • New TOEIC (Educational Testing Service, USA)

  4. 1.2 Assessment • BULATS Writing Test: Part I—15 min., students are asked to write a fax/email/short letter Part II—30 min., write a mini report or regular business letter

  5. BULATS Writing Test (Part I): You work in the human resources department, and have received the email. From: Amanda Pearson Subject: Job Interview Dear Sir/Madam I should be attending an interview at your company for the job of office assistant on Friday at 3 pm, but I have been ill this week. I am writing to ask if it is possible to re-arrange the interview for a later date. I am available any day next week. Best regards Amanda Pearson

  6. BULATS Writing Test (Part I): Write an email to Ms Pearson: ● thank her for her email; ● tell her a new interview day; ● ask her to bring a copy of CV. (Use about 50-60 words)

  7. BULATS Writing Test (Part II): You group manager has asked you to write a report about office space in your department. Write a report to the group manager about: ● the problems of space in your department; ● the effects of this on your department; ● your recommendations for improving. Write about 180~200 words.

  10. 2.1.1 Curriculum/Syllabus Design • 「商用英文寫作」最佳開設時間點 ● 嚴格來講,在「英語為外語」(EFL)的環境, 商用英文應該歸屬於「專業英語」(ESP, English for Specific Purposes)的領域。 ● 但就 EFL writing 的發展而言,大多數學者仍認為(Curry, 1996; Keil,1998; Leki,1992; Mabrito,1997)學生必須先具備基礎的寫作能力之後(如:大三、大四的學生),再選讀商用英文寫作較為適當。 ● 就高中高職而言,高三最適合。

  11. 2.1.2 Curriculum/Syllabus Design • 商英寫作變成翻譯課 ---開設在低年級(包括大一、大二)的商英寫作,常易流於形式化。 ---學生本身英語閱讀及寫作能力不足,經常使整個課程演變成翻譯課,主因是大部份的授課時間,老師都將教學重點放在解釋商用英文的專業術語及文件內容上 ---學生也因其自主性的寫作能力有限,往往只求努力背取常用商英書信片語及例句。 ---真正寫作時,只能蹩腳地將這些零碎的字串聯結起來,湊成一份四不像的商用英文文件。

  12. 2.1.3 Curriculum/Syllabus Design • Motivation! ---除了學生的基本讀寫能力之外,商英寫作課程成功與否的另一個決定性要素,取決於學生的學習動機 。 ---以國立高雄第一科技大學應用英語系為例,自九十四學年度起,改將商英寫作課程排入大四的最後一學期教授,並以為期十四週的密集課程授課,所開設的兩個時段(每班約30人)皆是爆滿的情況。

  13. 2.1.4 Curriculum/Syllabus Design • Timing! ---踏出校門新鮮人的各大企業,也同 時在每學年下學期開課後(約三、四月) 即密切地展開徵才活動。 ---渴望投入職場的大四社會新鮮人,正好 可將每週在課程中所學一一套用於求職的 過程中。

  14. 2.2 Curriculum/Syllabus Design 「商用英文寫作」課程設計之特色 --本課程之特殊性來自於課程規劃與進度的安排均符合成功的學習模式,其中最關鍵者有三: (1)課前學生需求評估分析(Needs Analysis) (2)情境學習模式(Contextual Model of Learning) (3)實作學習模式(Apprenticeship Learning Model)

  15. 2.2.1 Curriculum/Syllabus Design • Need Analysis: Pre-Course Writing Test --依本寫作課程需求,採用BULATS的寫作試題,於開學第一週對有意選讀的同學進行四十五分鐘的測驗。 --BULATS寫作測驗已發揮了引導學習者更清楚其學習目標的作用。

  17. 2.2.3 Curriculum/Syllabus Design • 實作學習模式(Apprenticeship Learning): 2 key components— (1)真實性練習 (authentic) e.g., resume, autobiography, evergreen application form (2) 計畫性學習活動 (project-based) e.g., interview-based presentation

  32. 節錄2006年三月份於「東吳大學外語學院校際學術研討會」中,政治大學外文中心車蓓群教授的一席話,作為本次講座的結尾:節錄2006年三月份於「東吳大學外語學院校際學術研討會」中,政治大學外文中心車蓓群教授的一席話,作為本次講座的結尾: 無論是任何一種英語專業課程,英語教師都應將課程設計的本身回到英語的專業上。換句話說,英語專業課程最終所傳授的並非專業知識,如商學或新聞,而是英語與文化,亦即教師本身之強項因此,接受委託開課的教師應盡力發揮自己的強項與本業,而非只是一味苦惱自己專業知識不足。(車蓓群,2006,頁23)
