FCC Annual Satellite Forum Yoel Gat March 2005 Confidential
Outline • Who we are? • Experience from providing Wi-Fi in trains in-motion • What is required from a mobile broadband terminal? • Limitations of low profile antennas • What could be done to stimulate the industry? Confidential
Who we are? • RaySat is a company dedicated to in-motion terminals • Products include • TorpedoRay – for high speed trains • SpeedRay – Satellite TV and broadband in motion • StealthRay – 2’’ low profile satellite TV for OEM integration • 160 people Headquartered in the US with a big R&D center in Sofia Bulgaria. Company was founded in 1997 • Technology company with strong distribution channels focusing on the consumer market (SUV,RV etc) • Full in house capabilities to develop and manufacture in-motion terminals Confidential
Experience from providing Wi-Fi in trains • Currently, TorpedoRay is installed in many trains in Europe • 1-way satellite reception with GPRS return • Current experience • Service availability 50%-60% (no GPRS), still people are happy (like the dial-up days) • Cost of $100K or more per train • Cellular connectivity, multiple operators and roaming • Strong need for 2 – way satellite • 3G and other technologies don’t excel at 300 Km per hour Confidential
What is required from a mobile broadband service? • Low profile antenna – 6’’ or less • Aesthetics for light-truck owner: market acceptance appearance, appearance, appearance • Garage height • Wind resistance • Seamless integration with the car • In-motion versus pop-up • 1 cable installation • Power consumption • Small footprint in the vehicle • Easy installation and maintenance Confidential
Limitation of low-profile antennas • Low height – low gain – wide beam width (elevation) • The need to track the satellite in a moving vehicle on a bumpy road • Polarization control (and tracking) • Skew angle – antenna cannot match the geostationary arc Confidential
What is required to stimulate the industry? • We recognize the FCC is creating an environment supportive to the industry • Building antennas that will work with multiple suppliers and multiple hub operators to create a multitude of distribution channels • Competitive environment requires quick approvals for license applications otherwise process will not start • Streamline process by using off-axis PFD instead of antenna sidelobe patterns • Due to the low antenna gains, high hub to remote PSDs are required. If the increase of the limits from 6dBW/4KHz would be a tremendous help. Confidential
