Wind Energy • In Brazil, the penetration of wind energy started with the Incentive Program for Renewable Energies – PROINFA, which aimed at increasing the participation of wind energy, biomass and small hydropower plants in the electric matrix; • In 2004, 46 wind farms were contracted under this Program (1.4 GW), and ca. 70% of them are already in operation; • In the latest years wind has been experimenting large growing rates in Brazil, following governmental policies of incentives and a strong interest of enterprises. • In 2009, the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), through the Energetic Research Company (EPE) launched wind energy auctions • Just in the first auction, 339 wind farm projects were technically approved (ca. 10,000 MW), which demonstrates the great potential and attractiveness of this energy source.

  13. Wind Energy • In the latest auction (August 17th and 18th, 2011), 1,929 MW were purchased, with a medium price of R$99.56/MWh (ca. US$60.00/MWh); • Since the first auction for renewable energies, the wind price has fallen 30%, and today it is competitive with other sources, incl. hydropower; • The combined utilization of hydro and wind, improves the energetic potential of both sources due to the seasonal complementary characteristics of them. • Brazil is competitive producing wind generators and equipment but there is still space for new partners on this area.
