Algebra 2 • Algebra 2 :purpose of this course is to continue the study of algebra and to provide the foundation for applying algebraic skills to other mathematical and scientific fields. • First Degree Equations and Inequalities • Linear Relations and Functions • Systems of Equation • Matrices • Quadratic, Polynomial, and Radical Equations and Inequalities • Advanced Functions and Relations • Rational Expressions • Exponential and Logarithmic Relations • Conic Sections • Discrete Mathematics • Sequence and Series • Probability and Statistics

Daily Classroom Routine • Sharpen pencils as you enter the room • Place assignment in the appropriate tray • Proceed to your assigned seat and begin working on the bell-ringer • The bell ringer will be checked and explained after the attendance is taken • The lesson for today begins after the bell-ringer • Class dismissal is not when the bell rings, however when you are told by Ms. Norman, “ you are dismissed”

  4. Attendance • Attendance is taken when the bell rings • I am tardy if I am not in my seat when the bell rings • I am absent if I am not present within the first ten minutes of class

Cellphones and Other Electronic Devices My cellphone/iPod etc. ,must be turned off and put away in my backpack, purse etc. Should I decide to violate the District Policy, my cell phone will be taken and turned in to the front office. No Exceptions! No Exceptions! • No texting of any kind is allowed during class • No responding to text messages is allowed during class • I cannot answer my cellphone during class • I cannot use the calculator on my cellphone during class • I cannot charge my cell phone during class • I cannot listen to music during class

  6. Disciplinary Actions and Consequences THESE ARE YOUR LIFE LINES!!!!! • Verbal warning • Parent contact • Parent conference • Referral to the appropriate Assistant Principal

  7. Class Requirements: Guidelines For Success • Be Respectful • Be Prepared • Be On Time • Participate • Be Responsible • No Restroom Permits • Follow District Rules • No Eating! No Food! • I am allowed a non-alcoholic beverage with a screw top • BE READY TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  8. Class Supplies • 1 subject 70 page spiral • #2 pencils – several packages • 3-Ring 1 ½ inch Binder. This is your math notebook. • 5 Dividers • Personal Pencil Sharpener • Notebook paper • Erasers • One large box Kleenex (10 points X-tra credit) • One large bottle Hand sanitizer (10 points X-tra credit) • One package of dry erase markers (10 points X-tra credit) • One package of white copy paper (10 points X-tra credit) • One package of 8 or more AAA batteries (10 points X-tra credit) • TI84 Graphing calculator (although calculators are provided by the district, it would be a wise investment to purchase your own.)

  9. MATH NOTEBOOK • The Math Notebook is a graded assignment and counts as a quiz grade • The notebook must include 5 dividers • The headings of the dividers are: Syllabus, Table of Contents, Notes, Graded Assignments, Newsletter

  10. NO WORK SHOWN, NO CREDIT GIVEN • ALL MATHEMATICS WORK MUST BE SHOWN TO RECEIVE CREDIT • CORRECT ANSWERS WITHOUT THE PROPER PROCEDURE WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT • TEAMWORK

DISTRICT Grading Policy • The students Mastery level shall be a major factor in determining the grade p18 • 50%: classwork, homework, take home quizzes, formula quizzes, math notebook, graded bell ringers and class participation • 50%: Unit Exams, Semester Exams, Group Projects • Teachers are required to take a minimum of 10 distinct assessments and 3 major assessments per six weeks p18

Assignments • All late assignments will be penalized • Assignments turned in one day late will receive a maximum grade of 70 • Assignments turned in two days late will receive a maximum grade of 60 • A ZERO may be given after the second day • Teachers will notify parents if a second zero occurs of any assignment • Provisions will be made to allow students to make up two zeros in each subject per six week grading period • The maximum grade for an alternate assignment may be a 50.

  13. DISTRICT Grading Formula 50% Distinct assessments +50% Major assessments 100% Student six week average Semester Exam is 20% or 1/5 of the final grade

HOW TO DO WELL IN ALGEBRA 2 • Always browse through the material for the next lecture in advance • Peruse the lecture notes and the appropriate sections of the handouts/textbook after each lecture • Should I fail to understand anything in my notes, come to math tutorials for help • Do a good job on all assignments. Re-work the problems that seem difficult to solve • Be courageous enough to ask questions in class where I do not understand it is my responsibility to tell Ms. Batiste where I do not understand.

  15. Assignment Heading The heading for all assignments must have the following information. • Algebra 2 (Class Period) • Name • Date • Assignment Name • Any assignment turned in without the proper heading will be deducted by 10 points. NO EXCEPTIONS! NO EXCEPTIONS!!

  16. *Bring your parent and have them send an email to Ms. Norman, with their contact information at jamie.norman@desotoisd.org–receive two 100% quiz grades *Should your parent not attend due to other commitments, they may send Ms. Norman an email – receive one 100% quiz grade Thursday, August 25 6:30-8:00pm is meet the parent night
