  2. The devastation of earthquakes can be horrific. An earthquake can be caused by two of the earths plates slide against each other.

  3. The most devastating one earthquake in Japan in 1923 killed 143,000 people. Earthquakes are recorded by a seismograph.

  4. Tectonic earthquakes will occur anywhere within the earth where there is sufficient stored elastic strain energy to drive fracture propagation along a fault plane. Most of the earthquake's energy is used to power the earthquake fracture growth or is converted into heat generated by friction.
