  1. ACT TWO SEGMENT 1

  2. P51-55 • We meet Elizabeth Proctor for the first time – the ‘cold woman’ Abigail described in Act One. • John returns home late. There is suspicion in the air. It is clear their relationship is still fragile and Elizabeth just cant quite forgive John for his affair. • John’s has little interest in the current gossip of witchcraft - Elizabeth on the other hand is worried. She asks John to go to court and tell them Abigail is lying. She believes he still has feelings for her when he refuses. • Elizabeth reveals the formality of the court following Abigail’s accusations. Discussing her leads to a frosty atmosphere – the tension builds.

  3. THEMES REVENGE – neighbours can use the hysteria as a way of expressing hatred/envy that they have never been able to before in such a strict Puritan community.

  4. ACT TWO SEGMENT 2

  5. P55-61 • Mary Warren – the Proctors servant – enters. She has been in court all day. Despite being furious with her for going against his wishes, John is still curious as to what is now going on. • Revelling in her new found sense of importance, we see a change in Mary as she details the events of the day. ‘She is a mouse no more’. • She reveals that Elizabeth has been accused. • Elizabeth knows Abigail is out to get her. When John refuses to act on this, her suspicion grows again. She warns him that he must rid himself of Abigail once and for all – or Elizabeth will lose her life.

  6. THEMES • HUMAN CRUELTY – circumstantial evidence is being created and used against people, ultimately to ensure their punishment.

  7. ACT TWO SEGMENT 3

  8. P61-75 • Hale enters. He is concerned about Elizabeth being accused and wants to find out himself about the Christian nature of this household. • Hale questions John – his lack of faith and attendance at church is apparent. • Elizabeth forces John to reveal the truth about Abigail’s lies. • Giles and Frances arrive to reveal that their wives have been arrested. • Cheever issues a warrant for the arrest of Elizabeth. The poppet – gifted by Mary Warren, manipulated by Abigail – is crucial to her being lead away in chains. • John now feels a great deal of responsibility for the escalation of this situation – through his affair with Abigial. He is physically enraged.

  9. THEMES • REBELLION – community breaking out, going against tradition, being swept up in the commotion and hysteria • REVENGE – neighbours taking on each other • GUILT – John feels, that spurs him to save his wife
