Knights • Background • In 1066, The English called the French soldiers who came on horseback knights. • Later any man that could fight on horseback became known as a knight. • Then they began to outfit themselves and obtain land. • Only the rich would be considered to be knights. • Medieval knights swore to uphold a code of chivalry – to uphold Christianity, defend women, and to protect the poor and weak. Steps to Becoming a Knight Born the son of a noble knight – first bite of solid food was from a sword. At age 8 become a page in another castle. He would learn reading, writing, simple math, dancing, to play chess, fight, hunt, manners and bravery. At age 14, he would become a squire. The duties would be to wake his knight, feed him, sleep on the floor beside him, clean the horse stable and polish his armor. He could go to battle but NOT FIGHT. At age 21, he would get his armor if he could afford it. The night before becoming a knight, he would spend the night in a chapel praying and planning to be the ideal knight. The dubbing would occur. Promised to defend orphans, widows and all church people. He would be struck with a sword on his shoulders. He would take the oath.
